Panthers Lose Final Game of Gulf Coast Showcase

MELBOURNE, FLA. – Florida Tech Panthers basketball lost their final exhibition contest of the tournament against the Salukis.

FINAL: Florida Tech 54, Southern Illinois 81
Records: Florida Tech (0-3, 0-1 SSC) Southern Illinois (3-5, 0-0 MV)

STATS OF THE MATCH:

First Half:
  • Unlike the first two tournament games Tech would not start off with the lead and would get on the board with a Max Polk layup to get the game started for the Panthers, 2-3.
  • The Salukis would in turn go on a (0-10) run and it would again be Max Polk to stop the run with a mid-range jumper, 4-13.
  • The Panthers would remain down in the first half as every shot would be answered by the Salukis'.
  • Elhadji Thiam and Donovan Brown would both get on the board with back-to-back free throw attempts, 14-26.
  • It would be Donovan Brown opening his arsenal leading the way for Tech down the stretch in the first half, scoring 11 of 12 points taking the game to the half, 25-33.
 
Second Half:
  • Elhadji Thiam would start the second half with a jumper to cut the Salukis lead to just six right out of halftime.
  • Unfortunately, this would be the closest that the Panthers would get to overtaking the lead.
  • The Salukis would go on a (21-7) run to blow the game open with a 20-point lead.
  • The game would remain out of reach for Tech, but Elhadji Thiam would carve out a nice stretch finishing the game shooting 62% from the field.
  • The Panthers would take the loss against the Salukis 54-81
 
NOTABLE PANTHERS:
  • Donovan Brown led the Panthers in scoring with 17 points and led in blocks with one.
  • Elhadji Thiam "ET" & #1 Max Polk finished with 14 points each. ET also tied with #14 Donovan Murphy for the lead in rebounds each with six. ET would take the solo lead for Tech in assists with two and steals with two.

UP NEXT:
The Panthers will return home to host the University of Puerto Rico-Bayamon November 29th, Friday at 4:30pm in search of their first win of the season.
