MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Florida Tech baseball team tried to mount a comeback in the bottom of the ninth, but came up short and fell to Sioux Falls, 7-5, at home.

STATS OF THE GAME:
- Sioux Falls wasted no time getting on the board in the top of the first inning. A walk and two singles loaded the bases with Cougars with one out. A hit-by-pitch and a walk brought in two runs to make it 2-0.
- Tech got one back in the bottom half of the frame on an RBI ground out from Marshall Burke to make it a 2-1 game.
- After a scoreless second inning, Tyler Vermillion took to the mound in the top of the third inning for the Panthers and struck out the side, with two strikeouts looking.
- Sioux Falls added three more runs in the top of the fourth with an RBI single and a two-RBI base knock to extend the lead to 5-1.
- Again, the Panthers answered in the bottom of the same inning. Brett Kelly doubled to right center and advanced to third on a wild pitch. With two outs, Camden Colman sent Kelly across the plate with a double of his own to cut the deficit to 5-2.
- In the next at-bat, Austin Sewell brought Colman home with a single into left field to make it a 5-3 game.
- The Cougars got both runs back in the top of the fifth on a Panther error and a single to extend the lead back up to 7-3.
- In the bottom of the sixth, Tech chipped away at the lead with an RBI fielder's choice from Gabe Garrett.
- An inning later, Carlos Guzman sent a towering shot over the center field fence, just left of the batter's eye, to bring the Panthers within two, 7-5.
- Both teams would go down in order until the bottom of the ninth. Jack Matousek led the inning off with a single into center field. M. Burke followed up with a single of his own to put runners on the corners with no outs.
- Sioux Falls closer, Logan Anderson, would induce a flyout and a strikeout to get to two outs. After hitting Kelly with a pitch, the bases would be loaded with two outs.
- Anderson would strike out the final batter of the game to secure the final score of 7-5.

UP NEXT: Florida Tech will return to Sunshine State Conference play with a weekend series against No. 14 Saint Leo on March 15-16. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday, March 15 at Andy Seminick-Les Hall Field in Melbourne, Fla.
