Schwartz Homers to Lift Panthers Over Eagles in Pitching Duel

MELBOURNE, Fla. – Florida Tech softball split the doubleheader against Embry-Riddle, winning the second game in walk-off fashion. The second game was a pitching duel that lasted until the final swing of Miranda Schwartz's bat in the bottom of the seventh.
 
GAME ONE:
STATS OF THE GAME:

STATS OF THE GAME:
  • Embry-Riddle came out hot to start, with their lead-off batter Raissa Bianco walking and Kerry O'Sullivan singling into right field.
  • Emma Wood put the hammer down with a three-run shot, putting the Eagles up 3-0.
  • Eagles' starting pitcher Shelby Morse forced a three-up, three-down in the bottom of the first.
  • The Eagles kept the momentum in the second, blasting another home run, this time off the bat of Lauren Latoria.
  • Katie Hogue ended the Panthers' hitting drought, scorching a line through the left side. However, nothing would come of it.
  • Offenses would slow down for both teams despite the countless runners on the base paths.
  • In the top of the sixth, Embry-Riddle again extended its lead with their third dinger of the game, grabbing a 5-0 lead.
  • Jolie Miracle attempted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh, bringing in two runs with a single to center field.

STATS OF THE GAME:
  • The first inning saw both teams go three up, three down. The Eagles would earn the first base runner in the second inning by an error.
  • Florida Tech registered the first hit in the bottom of the second as Schwartz nailed a ball in the 5-6 hole.
  • In the third, Celeste Casillas tallied the only Panthers' extra-base hit of the afternoon, doubling to center field.
  • Ella Niles retired 18 of her first 19 batters because of the error. She allowed her first and only hit of the night in the top of the seventh to Delaney Morgan.
  • Nile induced a flyout and a groundout, moving Morgan into scoring position at third. The pitcher ended the inning by getting another flyout.
  • The Panthers immediately got a runner on base in the bottom of the seventh due to Mya Ogbodiewgu getting hit by a pitch.
  • Schwartz finished her stellar day and the pitching duel by blasting a two-run shot over the fence.
 
NOTABLE PANTHERS:
  • Ella Niles pitched her second straight complete game and fourth straight game of over seven innings. The sophomore allowed one hit and struck out one batter on her way to her seventh win of the season.
  • Schwartz compiled three hits in five at-bats, scoring two runs and driving in two of her own.
  • The walk-off homerun is Schwartz's sixth of the year, which leads the team and triples her total from last season.
  • Katie Hogue went three-for-seven, making her batting average .330 on the season.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • The Panthers now move to an all-time 13-11 against Embry-Riddle
  • Alex Hendrian tossed her NCAA-leading 20th complete game of the season in Game One. She is the first Panther with 20 or more complete games in a season since Melanie Murphy in 2019.
  • Panthers have won four of six series since the Eagles joined the SSC ahead of the 2016 season, including all three played in Melbourne.
  • Schwartz's walk-off home run was the first by a Panther since Tori Szrom hit a solo walk-off on March 1, 2022, against Wilmington.
  • It's also the first walk-off home run for Tech in SSC play since Szrom hit a three-run game-winning home run on February 29, 2020 against Lynn.
 
UP NEXT: The Panthers are back at Nancy Bottge Field for the final game of the series against Rollins on Friday, March 29, starting at 1 p.m. ET.
