Softball Drops Opening Game to Barry

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Panthers started strong, taking the lead in the first however one bad inning led to a 2-1 loss to Barry on Friday night.

STATS OF THE GAME:
Final: Florida Tech 1, Barry 2
Records: Florida Tech (24-20, 13-15 SSC) | Barry (31-13, 16-7 SSC)
Location: Buccaneer Softball Field | Miami Shores, Fla.

STATS OF THE GAME:
  • At the top of the first, Kelly McLaughlin led off the game with a single to left center. The senior would later score on a throwing error by the Barry shortstop.
  • Ella Niles held off the Buccaneers in the bottom of the first, with the help of her defense. The second batter hit into a 4-6-3 double play.
  • However, Barry would hit two straight singles and walk to load the bases, but Niles induced a ground ball to get out of the jam.
  • The Buccaneers took the lead in the second, crossing the plate twice. The tying run came on an error, and the winning run came from a Cassandra Lee single.
  • Both teams struggled to get anything going offensively in the third inning.
  • In the fourth, Katie Hogue singled but the following three batters registered outs. Barry also got a hit but did not score a run.
  • Maci Barnhart pitched two stellar innings for the Buccaneers in the fifth and sixth, keeping the Panthers off the board.
  • Barry's offense loaded the bases again in the sixth, but more great defensive plays from Florida Tech kept the game a one-run difference.
  • Jillian Moeller grabbed the flyout and then launched the ball quickly to Jolie Miracle to get the tag at home plate.
  • Unfortunately, despite a Miranda Schwartz Walk and a Moeller single, putting two runners on base in the seventh, the Panthers could not keep the game alive.

NOTABLE PANTHERS:
  • Niles pitched six innings and gave up two runs, neither earned. Also did not give up a single extra-base hit.
  • Hogue, McLaughlin, and Moeller each tallied a hit on the evening.
