Baseball Splits Doubleheader; Eckerd Takes Series

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Florida Tech baseball team split its Saturday doubleheader with the Eckerd Tritons, taking game one by a score of 6-5, and dropping game two, 7-1.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Game 1 Final: Florida Tech 6, Eckerd 5
Game 2 Final: Florida Tech 1, Eckerd 7
Records: Florida Tech (15-20, 8-10 SSC), Eckerd (16-16, 5-10 SSC)
Location: Andy Seminick-Les Hall Field | Melbourne, Fla.

STATS OF GAME 1:
  • After a scoreless first inning, Eckerd exploded for four runs in the top of the second on four hits and two Panther errors.
  • The Panthers got two runs back in the bottom of the third on an RBI double from Jason Blackstone and an RBI groundout from Noah Burke to cut the lead in half, 4-2.
  • In the bottom of the fourth inning, the first five Panthers reached safely on a walk, a hit-by-pitch, two singles, and a Triton error to tack on three runs and take a 5-4 lead.
  • Still in the bottom of the fourth, Marshall Burke singled into left field to bring home Camden Colman and push the lead out to 6-4.
  • Ridge Skarbek took to the mound in the top of the fifth for Tech and worked a perfect inning of relief.
  • Both teams remained scoreless until the top of the seventh when a two-out base hit from Tyler Cox brought in a run for Eckerd to make it a one-run game, 6-5.
  • Brady Guthrie came into the game in the top of the ninth for the Panthers looking to slam the door on the Tritons. After a leadoff single and a sacrifice bunt, B. Guthrie recorded the final two outs of the inning to earn the save and give Tech the 6-5 win.

STATS OF GAME 2:
  • Singles from Blackstone and N. Burke put runners on first and second with two outs in the bottom of the first, but Eckerd starting pitcher, Tyler Cox, retired the final Panther of the inning to keep the game scoreless.
  • In the bottom of the second, Tech loaded the bases with two outs after three straight singles from Colman, Gabe Garrett, and Blackstone. Once again, Cox would get the final Panther to ground out to escape the jam.
  • Eckerd looked to get on the board in the top of the fourth with the bases loaded and just one out. Cole Shumaker laced a single through the left side that plated a run, but the Panthers got an out after N. Burke cut down the runner from second trying to score.
  • Another Triton single brought home another run to make it 2-0. Eckerd's fifth hit of the inning would bring another runner across the plate, but a fielding error by the Panthers allowed all the runners to come home to push the lead out to 5-0.
  • Trenten Anderson tossed two scoreless innings in a row to keep the game at 5-0 heading into the seventh inning.
  • Eckerd threatened in the top of the seventh with runners on second and third with one out. A wild pitch allowed one runner to score, but on the next pitch, Reid Lisle grounded into a fielder's choice that allowed Blackstone to gun down the runner at the plate. Dylan Dieguez would strike out the next batter to end the inning.
  • In the bottom of the eighth, Kelly and N. Burke both reached safely to begin the inning after a hit-by-pitch and a walk, but Eckerd's reliever would turn a double play in the next at-bat to get to two outs.
  • Two batters later, an RBI single from M. Burke plated Kelly to put Tech on the board and make it a 6-1 game.
  • Eckerd got the run back in the top of the ninth with a two-out RBI single.
  • Colman led off the bottom of the ninth with a single but would be stranded after the next three Panthers were retired to give the game its final score of 7-1.
