Guzman Homers Twice, But Baseball Falls to Southern in Doubleheader

LAKELAND, Fla. – Carlos Guzman homered twice in game one, but the Florida Tech baseball team dropped both of its season finale doubleheader against Florida Southern, 9-7 in game one, and 15-5 in game two.
 
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

STATS OF GAME 1:
  • Jason Blackstone led off game one with a double down the left field line and would come around to score on an RBI base hit from Marshall Burke to give Tech an early 1-0 lead.
  • FSC would get the run back in the bottom of the first with an RBI single from Lake Fisher. The Mocs would take the lead two batters later with a three-run home run that made it a 4-1 game.
  • In the bottom of the second, FSC grounded into a bases-loaded double play that allowed a run to score and push the lead to 5-1.
  • Carlos Guzman belted a three-run blast in the top of the third to bring the Panthers within one, 5-4.
  • The Mocs pushed two more runs across in the bottom of the third and fourth innings to take a 7-4 lead.
  • An RBI single from Josh Ford in the top of the fifth plated Brett Kelly to bring Tech within two, 7-5.
  • After a scoreless fifth inning, a one-out base knock from Fisher plated two more Mocs to extend their lead to 9-5 after six frames.
  • The Panthers responded immediately in the top of the seventh. Guzman smashed a solo home run over the left-field fence to make it 9-6, and a few batters later, Jacob Guthrie scampered home on a wild pitch to make it 9-7.
  • Both teams went scoreless for the rest of the game. Noah Burke singled with two outs in the top of the ninth, but the next Panther was retired to give the game its final score of 9-7.
 
STATS OF GAME 2:
  • After a scoreless first inning, FSC scored seven runs in the bottom of the second on six hits and three walks.
  • A grand slam from El'Rico Riley in the bottom of the third innings gave the Mocs an 11-0 lead.
  • Jacob Guthrie crushed a three-run home run in the top of the fourth to put the Panthers on the board, 11-3.
  • Pitching in relief, Tyler Dietz kept Southern off the board in the fourth and fifth innings, picking up three strikeouts along the way.
  • A wild pitch in the top of the sixth inning allowed Marshall Burke to cross home and make it an 11-4 game.
  • A two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth extended the Mocs' lead to 13-4.
  • In the top of the seventh, M. Burke plated Brett Kelly with an RBI single to cut the lead down to 13-5.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, a wild pitch brought home another run for FSC to make it 14-5.
  • Tilden Agee led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a solo home run to give the Mocs a 15-5 run-rule victory.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Florida Tech moves to 35-116 all-time against Florida Southern.
  • Jason Blackstone's on-base streak came to an end at 42 straight games. He reached base safely in 46 out of 48 games played this season.
  • With his RBI single in the top of the first inning in game one, Marshall Burke became just the third Panther freshman to total 60 hits in a season, and the first since Derek Wolske in 1998.
