Women’s Basketball Falls on the Road to Palm Beach Atlantic

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. –  The Florida Tech women's basketball team fell to Palm Beach Atlantic, 84-57, on Wednesday. Nadine Johnson had a near double-double on her way to a career-high nine rebounds.
 
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

FIRST QUARTER:
  • Despite a 10-0 deficit to start the game, Tai Roberts fought back with a mid-range jumper and hit one from beyond the arch after an Emily Acampora steal.
  • The Panthers finished the quarter well, hitting two free throws, and Remingtyn Smith cashed in on a layup by driving hard through the paint for the final basket.
  • However, the Sailfish would lead the Panthers 22-9 going into the next quarter.
 SECOND QUARTER:
  • It was a hot start for the Panthers, with Smith again finding her way to the basket, helped by five offensive rebounds and an assist by Kyandra Poiter, who grabbed three of them. The senior would end up with six total rebounds and five offensive.
  • In the following possession, Mikayla Morin made a field goal to bring Tech within nine points.
  • Tech capitalized on a few more layups but was down 39-19 at the half.
 THIRD QUARTER:
  • Roberts put an end to the Sailfish run by nailing a three-pointer.
  • At this point, Divine Guthrie made her presence known by making two field goals in back-to-back possessions. Johnson also had a nice quarter, first taking a rebound all the way to the hoop and later grabbing another rebound and forcing a foul on the other end for two made free throws.
  • The Panthers were down 60-38 with the final 10 minutes remaining.
 FOURTH QUARTER:
  • Smith took control of the offense in the fourth. She registered four of the first six points and later drilled a shot from the top of the key for three points.
  • Between Smith's first layup and her three-pointer. Deirdre Miller muscled her way to two field goals from under the net and swatted a Sailfish shot on the other end.
  • Johnson was all over the glass, hauling in three, including a tip-in bucket.
  • Despite the individual standouts, the Panthers could not close the gap, and Palm Beach Atlantic earned the 84-57 victory.
NOTABLE PANTHERS:
  • Tai Roberts scored a team-leading 14 points, nailing two out of four shots from deep. She also tallied two rebounds and a steal.
  • Remingtyn Smith tied a career-high 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting. The Summerhill, Pa. native notched her third straight game with five rebounds.
  • Nadine Johnson nearly eclipsed a double-double with eight points and a career-high nine rebounds. The freshman was also a force on defense with three steals, which is the second time this season and seventh multi-steal game.
  • Kyandra Poitier made it her ninth straight game with at least one block or steal, recording one each against the Sailfish.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
  • Florida Tech is still 30-10 all-time and 11-6 in West Palm Beach.
 
UP NEXT: Florida Tech starts a two-game home stand against Florida Southern on Saturday, January 25, for Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night. The tip-off is set for 2 p.m. ET.
