Panthers Drain Seven Three-Pointers in Loss to Eagles

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Panthers women's basketball team was hot from beyond the arch. However, it was not enough in a 67-51 loss to the Eagles.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: Florida Tech 51, Embry-Riddle 67
Records: Florida Tech (5-13, 2-10 SSC), Embry-Riddle (17-2, 11-1 SSC)
Location: Clemente Center | Melbourne, Fla.

FIRST QUARTER:
  • With early momentum, winning the opening tip-off, Emily Acampora nailed a deep two-point field goal for the game's opening points.
  • The Eagles went on an 8-0 run before the Panthers took a timeout.
  • Mikayla Morin ended the Eagles' run with a fade-away jumper that bounced off the glass. Tech was in an 8-4 deficit with six minutes remaining in the quarter.
  • A couple of minutes later, Jessica Lange moved the Panthers closer, bodying up two defenders for a basket from under the rim. After a bucket from Embry-Riddle, Tai Roberts brought back within two with a signature mid-range jumper.
  • Remingtyn Smith closed the quarter, making a free throw as the Panthers headed into the second quarter down 13-9.
SECOND QUARTER:
  • The bank shots were falling for Tech as Sarah Liberatore came out of the quarter break, cashing in on a three-pointer off the glass. Tech cut the score to 13-12 early in the quarter.
  • Divine Guthrie made two incredible defensive stops in a matter of seconds, first blocking a shot in a one-on-one situation down the court and then stealing the ball from the same player when she recovered the offensive rebound.
  • Two possessions later, Roberts drained a three-pointer, keeping the game at a six-point difference.
  • Out of the media timeout, Liberatore once again made the Eagles pay out of a break, drilling a deep shot from the left arch. A minute later, the senior cashed in on another one from the exact spot, having Tech down one possession.
  • Embry-Riddle scored five unanswered to end the quarter for a 31-23 advantage.
 THIRD QUARTER:
  • The three-pointers were dropping for the Panthers. Roberts drained her second and the team's fifth early in the quarter.
  • Tech continued to own possession out of the timeout, capitalizing on a baseline layup from Guthrie after one with seven left to play in the third quarter.
  • Embry-Riddle rolled off 10 consecutive points and built a 20-point lead with three and a half minutes left in the third.
  • Nadine Johnson stepped in front of an Eagle player for her second steal, leading to a Panther basket by Morin. However, Tech was down 48-30 with 10 minutes left in the game.
 FOURTH QUARTER:
  • Guthrie secured the first basket on a long elbow shot as the Panthers looked to close the gap.
  • The defense was on their toes, stripping another ball from the Eagles. Smith swiped it and dealt the ball to Roberts for free throw opportunities.
  • Dalma Ehmann had a stellar quarter, scoring six straight points for the Panthers from the paint. Ehmann would find another opening the possession after a Roberts' three-pointer.
  • Tech finished the game with a Smith layup and Liberatore's fourth three-pointer. Unfortunately, the Panthers fell to the Eagles 67-51.
NOTABLE PANTHERS:
  • Tai Roberts and Sarah Liberatore both led the team with 13 points similarly. Roberts made 3-of-4 from deep, and Liberatore made 4-of-8 from three. Roberts was also the team leader in rebounds and assists, grabbing seven and three assists.
  • Roberts became the 22nd player in program history to score 800 points in their career and the first to reach the mark since DeLise Williams in December 2017.
  • It's Liberatore's second game with four or more three-pointers and fifth with multiple.
  • The Panthers' seven three-pointers were the second most this season.
  • Three Rebels had multiple steals, including Nadine Johnson, Emily Acampora, and Remingtyn Smith. It's the second straight game for Acampora and third in the last four for Johnson.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
  • The Panthers are 7-11 against the Eagles.
