INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: Florida Tech
48, Eckerd
77
Records: Florida Tech (5-14, 2-11 SSC), Eckerd (15-4, 10-3 SSC)
Location: McArthur Center | St. Petersburg, Fla.
FIRST QUARTER:
- A second chance opportunity for the Panthers from Mikayla Morin put Tech on the board in this one after a three-pointer late in the shot clock from the Tritons, 2-3.
- Early on it would be the energy from Morin sparking Tech to do some damage early.
- A steal from Morin led to a Kyandra Poitier jumper, followed by a Morin defensive rebound, and then on the offensive end a Morin jumper gave Tech their first lead, 6-5.
- Tech's offense would slow down over the last six minutes of the first quarter as all six points they would score came from Poitier, but Tech was outscored (6-15) to close out, 12-20.
- Poitier led all scorers with eight points accounting for all but four for the Panthers
SECOND QUARTER:
- Both teams had difficulty scoring to start the second quarter as the first points came from Triton free-throws and for Tech it would come from a Tai Roberts layup almost three minutes in, 14-26.
- The supporting cast for Tech would add to the scoring total as Remington Smith would jump into the box score with a much-needed three-pointer for Tech to keep them within reach of the Tritons, 17-29.
- Following Smith, Nadine Johnson would drop in free throws for Tech with just over five minutes left before halftime, 19-29.
- At the four-minute mark, the Tritons would start a (6-20) run similar to the first quarter as they found the holes in Techs' defense.
- During the Triton run it was Dalma Ehmann, Roberts, and Divine Guthrie would do the scoring for Tech, but they could not match the three final plays for Eckerd, all finishing with three-pointers made and a buzzer-beater three to end the first half, 25-29.
THIRD QUARTER:
- Poitier would pick up from his first-half success on the offensive end as she scored the first three points of the second half via a free throw followed by a jumper.
- This would be the only scoring from either side over the first five minutes of the second half.
- The scoreless streak would be broken by a Triton layup and responded with a jumper from Poitier, 30-51.
- As the lead for Eckerd increased over the last six minutes of the half, Morin would register an and-one layup for the Panthers, 33-57 and that would be the lone score for Tech to close out the quarter, 33-64.
FOURTH QUARTER:
- Poitier would continue her fine night by starting the fourth quarter with a second chance layup as Tech looked to put up a comeback on the Tritons, 35-66.
- The Panthers' comeback would fall short however as their last basket would come from Poitier at the four-minute mark as the Tritons would continue to pour it on up to the end and take the win, 48-77.
- The difference in this matchup came specifically from shooting as the Tritons shot 50% from the field and 37.5% from three compared to the Panthers who shot 25.8% from the field and 18.8% from three.
NOTABLE PANTHERS:
- Kyandra Poitier finished with 18 points, tying her season-high while shooting a season-best 84% from the field and eight rebounds to lead the game as well.
