Panthers Knock Off Top Seeded Argonauts, Advance to South Region Championship

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Florida Tech women's soccer team knocks off the top seed in the South Region, West Florida, in hard-fought, 2-1 victory on Sunday, Nov. 23. With the win, Tech advances to the Sweet 16 of the 2025 NCAA Tournament.

GAME NOTES
  • Tech got off to a hot start as Lauryn Wood scored her fifth goal of the season in the 4th minute to give the Panthers the early lead in hostile territory.
  • The Argonauts attacked the Florida Tech goal on four separate occasions in minutes eight through 16, resulting in three Kaitlin Sinkler saves. 
  • West Florida attempted to tie the match at 1-1, but Sinkler saved her fifth shot of the half. Heading towards the bottom left area of Tech's goal.
  • Alice Mottershead had a good look at the goal in the 24th minute, but her shot was saved by the UWF keeper.
  • UWF tied the score in the 29th minute, as a nice cross was headed in by an Argonaut player.
  • Mia Otero's shot was saved by the West Florida goalie a minute after.
  • Sinkler would notch her fifth save of the half in the 36th minute that came of a West Florida set piece.
  • The Argonauts would fire two final shots at the Florida Tech goal in the half, but neither would be on target.
  • Sinkler would continue her huge day in net with two saves in the 50th minute.
  • Otero got a shot off on the West Florida goal after a corner kick in the 53rd minute that would be denied by the UWF goalkeeper.
  • In the 80th minute, Tech would earn a throw in inside of Argonaut territory. The Panthers throw went inside the box which UWF would clear out. Rebecca Storr was near midfield as she fired a shot that would roll past the West Florida keeper and into the bottom left for a goal to put the Panthers ahead, 2-1.
  • From there on, the Panthers went on the defensive as they held off the West Florida attack in the 82ndand 83rd minutes.
  • With the top seed on the ropes, Tech defended three back-to-back-to-back shots by the Argonauts in the 85th minute, all of which deflected by the Panthers.
  • Tech would hold off the Argonauts as they earned a berth in the South Region Championship and sweet 16.
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
  • Kaitlin Sinkler had a season-high of nine saves in 20 shots faced.
  • Lauryn Wood scored her fifth goal of the season in the 4th minute.
  • Rebecca Storr scored the game-winning goal in the 80th minute, her fifth goal of the season. 
  • This marks the third time in program history that the Panthers have eliminated the 1-seed in the South Region on the road.
 
UP NEXT
The Panthers will advance to the sweet 16 as they will battle with Nova Southeastern for the third time this season. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m. EST on Sunday, Nov. 30 in Davie, Florida.
