Hendrian Shines as Panthers Prevail in Pitcher’s Duel

LAKELAND, Fla. – In a complete game two-hitter, Alex Hendrian led the Panthers to a Friday night 1-0 victory over Florida Southern. The Panthers crossed the plate in the fourth and held on to take Game One of the series.

GAME ONE:
STATS OF THE GAME:
Final: Florida Tech 1, Florida Southern 0
Records: Florida Tech (6-9, 2-2 SSC) | Florida Southern (1-11, 0-4 SSC)
Location: Chris Bellotto Field | Lakeland, Fla.

STATS OF THE GAME:
  • Florida Tech's pitcher, Hendrian, and Florida Southern's pitcher, Des Aitken, foreshadow a tightly contested game from the first inning. The top of the lineup from each team failed to record a hit.
  • The second inning went better for the Mocs; however, they only got one ball through the left side. Hendrian got out of it with two of her four strikeouts on the night.
  • After three innings, the game remained tied at 0-0 with a repeat of the first inning in the third.
  • Tech broke through in the fourth, securing the winning run. Ella Niles walked and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Celeste Casillas singled, allowing Niles to cross home plate.
  • Despite letting up a runner due to an error, Hendrian earned the next three outs for a scoreless bottom of the fourth.
  • It looked as though the Panthers were about to extend the lead in the fifth. Julianna Hynes poked a ball and took first base.
  • Florida Southern's catcher caught Hynes stealing, but their pitcher walked Dani Sigel and allowed a double to Malaya Nelson. However, a groundout to the pitcher saved the Mocs from giving up more runs.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Hendrian struck out two other batters, keeping the Panthers lead at 1-0.
  • Following a 1-2-3 inning from both teams in the sixth, the Panthers tried again to build a cushion in the seventh. Hynes tallied her second leadoff hit of the game to centerfield. Jacqleen Golden pinch ran and stole second but was stranded there as two batters flew out and the last grounded out.
  • Hendrian downed the final three batters with help from Nelson, who sniped a runner at second base following a single.
NOTABLE PANTHERS:
  • Alex Hendrian let up just two hits and struck out a season-high four batters for her best outing of the season.
  • Julianna Hynes singled twice for the first multi-hit game of her career, going 2-for-3.
  • Celeste Casillas came up clutch, driving in the game's lone run.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Since the start of the 2016 season, Florida Tech is 22-5 in the all-time series
  • The Panthers under Val Silvestrini, the Panthers have won 10 of 15 series against Florida Southern
  • Tech is 12-7 at Chris Bellotto Field under Val Silvestrini, including four series wins out of six in Lakeland, and have won the series in their past three trips there.
