Seventh Inning Comeback Leads to First Series Win

LAKELAND, Fla. – Going into the seventh, the Panthers faced a 9-4 deficit against Florida Southern; however, after five singles and three stolen bases, the Panthers headed to extras, where they put up a seven spot in the ninth for a 16-10 win and secured the series. The third and final game did not go the way of the Panthers as they would fall to the Mocs, 2-1

GAME ONE:
STATS OF THE GAME:
Final: Florida Tech 16, Florida Southern 10
Records: Florida Tech (7-9, 2-2 SSC) | Florida Southern (1-12, 0-5 SSCC)
Location: Chris Bellotto Field | Lakeland, Fla.

STATS OF THE GAME:

  • Chloe Fariello singled and stole second in the first but did not come around to score.
  • Florida Southern grabbed an early lead, spotting two in the bottom of the first on a leadoff home run and back-to-back doubles.
  • The second inning saw three Panthers and three Mocs go down in order.
  • Malaya Nelson found her way to third via a hit-by-pitch, groundout, and a passed ball. After Fariello walked and swiped her second bag, Celeste Casillas dropped the ball in left field, plating both runners and tying the game at 2-2.
  • Tech was pushed in front in the fourth inning and sparked by a leadoff triple by Julianna Hynes. Followed by a Brooklyn Lorenzo double to left field for the 3-2 advantage.
  • The Panthers did not stop there. Ella Niles stroked a ball to right field, bringing home Lorenzo later in the inning.
  • Florida Southern responded with two runs of their own, driven in by Kate Mikle's double.
  • The Mocs sported a massive bottom of the sixth for a significant lead. Despite two outs on the first two batters, the Mocs crossed the plate five times on six consecutive hits.
  • Needing to get all those runs back with three outs remaining in the top of the seventh, the Panthers had a tall task.
  • Niles led off the seventh, poking a ball down the leftfield line, followed by singles from Hynes and Casillas to load the base with zero outs registered.
  • A sacrifice fly brought the first run in and opened second base for Casillas for the taking. Then, a sequence that included two singles and two stolen bases had the Panthers with two runs.
  • A deep foul out and a wild pitch created two more runs and tied the game at 9-9.
  • Alex Hendrian stepped into the circle after her stellar performance the night before. She tossed two additional great innings, allowing no runs and two hits.
  • In the ninth inning, Casillas recorded her third hit to lead off, then Miranda Schwartz punched a hole in the outfield wall for a double and the 10-9 lead.
  • Tech gave themselves a cushion, sacrificing the next two batters to score Schwartz. The cushion grew larger on four straight singles and later a Casillas double, increasing their edge to 16-9.
  • While the Mocs blasted a solo shot in the bottom of the ninth, Hendrian took care of business as the Panthers earned the series win.

GAME TWO:
STATS OF THE GAME:
Final: Florida Tech 1, Florida Southern 2
Records: Florida Tech (7-10, 2-2 SSC) | Florida Southern (2-12, 1-5 SSCC)

STATS OF THE GAME:

  • In the second game of the doubleheader, Fariello again recorded the game's first hit. However, the Panthers went scoreless.
  • Fariello worked the circle, too, pitching her first career start. The redshirt freshman let up a hit but no runs in the first.
  • Hynes continued her tremendous weekend, stroking a hit to left field and putting two runners on base with no outs in the second. Nelson brought her home on an RBI single through the right side. The Panthers led 1-0 after the top of the second.
  • However, the lead did not hold for long. Florida Southern's Jadyn Bushnell doubled and came around on a wild pitch and groundout.
  • Fariello kept the Mocs off the scoreboard in the third but let up the winning run in the fourth. Bushnell doubled again, scoring the runner at third.
  • The Panthers threatened in the sixth when Schwartz got hit with a pitch, and Audrey Gurule stole second in her place. Tech could not get the tying run and fell to the Florida Southern 2-1.
