No. 19 Panthers Battle Hard but Fall to No. 16 Seton Hill

MELBOURNE, Fla. – In a closely contested match the Florida Tech Panthers fell to the Seton Hill Griffins with a final score of 14-11. Despite standout performances from Phoebe Hurt leading the team with three goals, and Sophia Scichilone, and Charlotte Hardie adding in two each. Seton Hill had two players score three goals each helping the Griffins take the win.

FIRST QUARTER: 
  • Sophia Scichilone broke the scoreless tie at the 9:38 minute mark as she sliced through the defense of Seton Hill.
  • Gillian Craig added the second goal for the Panthers at 8:05 coming from a free position shot.
  • Scichilone then added in another score pushing the Panthers up to a 3-0 lead with exactly six minutes left in the first quarter.
  • The Griffins responded big as they answered the third goal from Tech with their first goal with 3:07 left, but they wouldn't stop there.
  • Just over one minute later at 2:03, the Griffins scored goal number two cutting the Panther lead to just one.
  • Less than a minute after that, what was a three-goal lead for the Panthers became a tie game at 3-3.
SECOND QUARTER: 
  • The Griffins kept their foot on the gas as they scored two more unanswered goals to start the second quarter, 5-3.
  • Tech would respond however as Charlotte Hardie would score at the 9:52 minute mark to keep Tech within one trailing 5-4.
  • Seton Hill tacked on one more goal in the quarter pushing their lead back to two with 4:09 left to play before halftime.
  • The Panthers responded with two goals, one from Phoebe Hurt in a free position shot and the other from Clare McGuire to tie things with 1:30 left, and the teams would remain deadlocked at halftime tied 6-6.
THIRD QUARTER:
  • Staying hot coming out of the half was Hurt as she delivered her second goal of the night just one minute and 25 seconds into the third, but the Griffins would answer the score with a score of their own just 51 seconds later 7-7.
  • Seton Hill then took the lead back from the Panthers after a goal at 8:19 in which the Panthers again tied the game with Sofie Bender score 8-8.
  • The difference maker in the game came from the Griffins as they scored three unanswered goals over four minutes taking an 11-8 lead.
  • Caroline Finn made sure to cut the deficit back to two with 2:31 left on the clock and the Panthers would trail entering the fourth quarter 11-9.
 
FOURTH QUARTER: 
  • The Griffins struck first in the fourth with back-to-back goals just nearly two minutes apart with the first one coming at 9:26 and the second coming at 7:25 building their lead to the largest of the game at 13-9.
  • The Panthers registered two more goals one from Hurt at 5:47, and the second from Hardie at 2:44 but it wouldn't be enough as Seton Hill added in one last goal in between the two from Tech and the Panthers would suffer the loss.
NOTABLE PANTHERS:  INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Tech and Seton Hill were dead even in shots with 31 each and Tech ended with more clears (17-15), but the Griffins had more groundballs (14-8).
  • Tech had the advantage in saves (10-9), but the Griffins had more draw controls (17-10)
  • The Panthers were (17-22) on the clears, while the Mavericks were (15-19).
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
 
  • This marked Phoebe Hurt's first hat trick of her career.
  • All-time vs. Seton Hill: 0-1, first-ever meeting between schools.
 
UP NEXT: The Panthers will hit the road and travel to Young Harris, Georgia as they face off against Young Harris College this coming Saturday, March 15 starting at 5pm.
