Tough Second Inning Has Panthers Drop Opening Game Against Saint Leo

MELBOURNE, Fla. – After an impressive first inning against one the top pitchers in the SSC, the Panthers let up a six-run top of the second, which they were not able to come back from in an 11-3 loss to the Lions. Haley Rider is still stroking a hot bat, blasting her fourth home run of the season.

STATS OF THE GAME:
Final: Florida Tech 3, Saint Leo 11
Records: Florida Tech (21-13, 7-6 SSC) | Saint Leo (23-8, 8-5 SSC)
Location: Nancy Bottge Field | Melbourne, Fla.

STATS OF THE GAME:

  • Following stellar performances in relief during the past two games, Chloe Fariello got the nod to start Game One. She let up two hits in the first inning but worked out of the jam, keeping the Lions off the scoreboard.
  • The Panthers came out strong, plating three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Ella Niles walked to leadoff and swiped second base. After two outs, Miranda Schwartz laced a ball up the middle, bringing home Niles. The cherry on top was Haley Rider's deep shot to center field for two RBI.
  • Saint Leo responded the next half-inning, rattling off six runs, going through the Lions' lineup.
  • Neither team had a runner-in-scoring position in the third inning. Fariello bounced back with a 1-2-3 inning, ending with a swinging strikeout.
  • A couple more runs crossed home plate in the top of the fourth, increasing the Lions' lead to 8-3. Then, in the fifth, Saint Leo recorded three hits for three runs and the 11-3 advantage.
  • Tech never stops fighting, and that will not change on Friday evening. With one out, Fariello sliced a ball past the Lions' second baseman and then moved to second on a wild pitch. Celeste Casillas followed with a single and registered a stolen base. However, Saint Leo's pitcher produced two straight outs, finishing the game in five innings.

NOTABLE PANTHERS:

  • Haley Rider has been unstoppable in conference play, launching another home run in her 1-for-2 night. The freshman is hitting 11-for-18 (.611) in SSC play with a double, two triples, all four home runs, and eight RBI.
  • Miranda Schwartz drove in her eighth RBI in six games.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Tech is 48-87-1 all-time and 16-40 at home against Saint Leo
  • Rider's four home runs this season is the most by a freshman since Vanessa Rubio and Julianna Goldberg also hit four in 2017.

UP NEXT: The Panthers return to Nancy Bottge Field Saturday afternoon for a doubleheader against Saint Leo. The first pitch for Game Two is set for noon.
