Panthers Take Game Three in Walk-Off Fashion

MELBOURNE, Fla. – With the help of two strong pitching performances, Tech kept close in both games, losing Game Two to Saint Leo 3-1 but taking Ga me Three 4-3 with a walk-off sacrifice fly. The Panthers' two pitchers combined for 14 innings pitched, five earned runs, and nine strikeouts.

GAME ONE:
STATS OF THE GAME:

Final: Florida Tech 1, Saint Leo 3
Records: Florida Tech (21-14, 7-7 SSC) | Saint Leo (24-8, 9-5 SSC)
Location: Nancy Bottge Field | Melbourne, Fla.

STATS OF THE GAME:

  • Saint Leo methodically worked a run for the opening score of the game. First, the Lions walked and stole base, followed by a single and a stolen base, creating two runners in scoring position with zero outs. The Panthers starting pitcher, Sammy Murphy, worked out by producing three straight outs. However, one was a sacrifice bunt for a run.
  • The Lions orchestrated another run in the top of the second, taking an early 2-0 lead.
  • Both teams threatened in the third with a runner at second base, but neither plated a run.
  • Murphy shut down the Lions' offense in the fourth, setting up the Panther's offense. Chloe Fariello started with a leadoff double. After stealing third base, Fariello slid into home plate on a wild pitch. Tech remained down 2-1 to Saint Leo.
  • Each team recorded a hit in the fifth and sixth innings, but no runs were scored.
  • Back-to-back singles from the Lions in the seventh had runners in prime position for a Sydney Cline RBI single to the pitcher. Murphy struck out her fourth batter and forced a foul, giving the Panthers one last chance.
  • However, Tech could not come up with runs in the bottom of the seventh, losing to Saint Leo 3-1.

GAME TWO:
STATS OF THE GAME:

Final: Florida Tech 4, Saint Leo 3
Records: Florida Tech (22-14, 8-7 SSC) | Saint Leo (24-9, 9-6 SSC)
Location: Nancy Bottge Field | Melbourne, Fla.

STATS OF THE GAME:

  • For the second consecutive game, Saint Leo scored the opening run in the first inning on a double to left field.
  • Florida Tech starting pitcher Alex Hendrian returned in the second to strike out two batters and let up zero runs. She also went unscathed in the third inning and struck out one batter.
  • It was in the third inning that the Panthers' offense impacted the game. Malaya Nelson's impressive Game Three began with a single to left center to open the third. Nelson advanced to second on an Ella Niles bunt, which bounced over the pitcher's head.
  • With the base loaded and no outs, Miranda Schwartz skyed a ball to center field, bringing in Nelson. Haley Rider followed, slicing a ball over the Lions' second baseman, scoring two more runs. Tech led the Saint Leo 3-1, heading into the fourth inning.
  • Saint Leo got one back in the fourth on a hit down the right-field line.
  • The bottom of the fourth saw Nelson drop another hit into center field, but the next two batters struck out.
  • Hendrian produced three straight groundballs in the fifth inning. In the sixth, she let up a lead-off single and proceeded by three outs.
  • Celeste Casillas and Nelson recorded singles in the fifth and sixth, respectively, but the score remained 3-2 in the Panthers' favor.
  • The final inning began with a spectacular line out that bounced off Schwartz's glove into shortstop Casillas's glove. However, Gabi Olavarria on Saint Leo tripled with one out. Hendrian struck the next batter out, looking like she might work out of the jam, but Briana Neal smoked a hard shot while driving in Olavarria.
  • Like they have done all season, the Panthers found a way to win in the seventh. Casillas drilled a double to the left gap. Schwartz placed a perfect bunt, moving Casillas to third. The senior slid in for the walk-off run, tagging third base on a sacrifice fly from Rider. Tech defeated Saint Leo 4-3.

NOTABLE PANTHERS:

  • Haley Rider drove in three runs, including the game-winning RBI in Game Three. She also recorded a hit in every game of the series.

  • Alex Hendrian went the distance and struck out five in Game Three. Sammy Murphy also pitched seven innings in Game Two, striking out four.
