VIERA, Fla. – The Florida Tech softball team has been on fire the past five days, winning six straight games. On Saturday, the Panthers grabbed two more in a 5-1 win over Walsh and a 7-6 victory over Tiffin.
GAME ONE:
STATS OF THE GAME:
Final: Florida Tech 5, Walsh 1
Records: Florida Tech (13-12, 4-5 SSC) | Walsh (2-8, 0-0 G-MAC)
Location: USSSA Space Coast Complex | Viera, Fla.
STATS OF THE GAME:
- Ella Niles is scary on the base paths. A day after stealing four bags, she tallied two more once she got on base via a single. It made it a no-doubt run once Celeste Casillas put a ball in play.
- Chloe Fariello fanned the first six Walsh batters in the first two innings.
- In the top of the third, Malaya Nelson walked and took second base. Nelson came around to score, helped by a Niles single and defensive error. Niles grabbed her third steal before crossing home plate on a Casillas double to center field. Panthers had an early 3-0 advantage.
- Despite a runner reaching on an error, Fariello struck out a batter and induced two ground balls, keeping the Cavaliers off the scoreboard.
- With two outs, Brooklyn Lorenzo doubled to left field. Another Walsh defensive mistake allowed Lorenzo to add to Tech's lead on a fielding error.
- The Cavaliers capitalized on Panther's mistakes at the bottom of the fourth. Linsey Bingham reached on an error. She would give Walsh their first run later in the inning, but the Cavs were still down 4-1.
- Kelsey Hahn relieved Fariello for the second straight day and was lights out like she had been all week. Hahn produced a 1-2-3 fifth inning while gaining another strikeout.
- Haley Rider tripled to left field in the following half inning and brought home on an error for the 5-1 edge.
- Hahn registered three more strikeouts, including two in the sixth, to seal the Panther's victory.
GAME TWO:
STATS OF THE GAME:
Final: Florida Tech 7, Tiffin 6
Records: Florida Tech (14-12, 4-5 SSC) | Tiffin (11-8, 0-0 G-MAC)
Location: USSSA Space Coast Complex | Viera, Fla.
STATS OF THE GAME:
- Niles could not be stopped, singling to lead off and stealing second in back-to-back games. After a Fariello walk, both would score on a fielding error by the Tiffin third baseman. A Miranda Schwartz sacrifice fly made it a 3-0 Panther lead.
- Tiffin earned their first hit in the second, but a groundout double play ended the inning.
- Alex Hendrian held the Dragons down in the third in a 1-2-3 inning.
- Everything went right for the Panthers in the third from the start. Fariello doubled, then while stealing third, a throwing error helped her cross home plate. Runners on first and second, Rider stroked her second triple of the day, driving in two more runs. Tech got its seventh and final run when the Dragons' pitcher, Isabella O'Brien, threw a wild pitch.
- The Dragons answered with a three-spot on three straight hits and a triple in the top of the fourth.
- Until the seventh, Niles was the only player to register a hit, and of course, she stole second right after.
- Tiffin threatened a comeback in the seventh, plating three runs. Again, the Dragon began the inning like the fourth with three consecutive hits, loading the bases on zero out. The first run came on a wild pitch, the second a sacrifice fly, and the third on a double.
- However, Hahn created a fly-out and a line-out, shutting the door on Tiffin and winning 7-6.
NOTABLE PANTHERS:
- Haley Rider moves her hit streak to 10 games after going 3-for-6 with two RBI on Saturday. The freshman also hit two triples.
- Ella Niles went 4-for7 and stole five bases in two games.
- Kelsey Hahn pitched 6.2 innings in relief, allowing four hits and striking out five while earning her second career win. Chloe Fariello pitched four innings, giving up one hit, one unearned run, and striking out three.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
- The Panthers won in their first-ever meeting against Walsh.
- Tech became 13-2 against Tiffin all-time in their first neutral site meeting. The teams have met in five of the past seven seasons.
- Niles' five stolen bases put her fourth in program history in career steals, passing Cheyenne Nelson.
