Softball Tames No. 3 Tampa’s Offense in Game Three Shutout and Series Victory

TAMPA, Fla. – While Florida Tech softball dropped a tightly-contested first game, 3-1 to No. 3 Tampa, the Panthers turned it around, shutting out the Spartans 1-0 for the series. Getting her 10th start of the season, Chloe Fariello dialed up her best outing of the 2025 season in Game Three.

GAME ONE
STATS OF THE GAME:

Final: Florida Tech 1, No. 3 Tampa 3
Records: Florida Tech (28-19, 14-12 SSC) | Tampa (36-5, 19-4 SSC)
Location: Naimoli Family Softball Field | Tampa, Fla.

STATS OF THE GAME:

  • Sammy Murphy began with a 1-2-3 inning from the circle in the first. She would let up a hit in the second but left the runner stranded.
  • Malaya Nelson placed the Panthers' first hit in the third inning. However, Tampa's Kate DeSimone put the inning to rest with the next batter.
  • As Murphy continued to deal, pitching her third straight 1-2-3 inning heading into the fifth inning, Tech's offense gave her some support.
  • Off the top of the high, deep left center wall, Brooklyn Lorenzo crushed a double. Following a sacrifice bunt, Nelson brought Lorenzo home on a sliced ball up the middle.
  • However, the Spartans responded with a bases-loaded two-RBI double in the bottom of the fifth. Tampa held a 2-1 advantage after five innings.
  • Tampa extended their lead to 3-1 on another double in the bottom of the sixth
  • Celeste Casillas added her second hit in the sixth, and Nelson slapped her third in the seventh, but the Spartans evened the series on a 3-1 win.

GAME TWO
STATS OF THE GAME:

Final: Florida Tech 1, No. 3 Tampa 0
Records: Florida Tech (29-19, 15-12 SSC) | Tampa (36-6, 19-5 SSC)
Location: Naimoli Family Softball Field | Tampa, Fla.

STATS OF THE GAME:

  • From the jump, Ella Niles placed a well-executed bunt for a single. Following a fielder's choice putting Samantha Shortal on first base, Shortal advanced to second on a wild pitch, swiped third base, and sprinted home on a throwing error.
  • Fariello's impressive outing started with getting out of a jam, which saw two runners in scoring position by manufacturing two straight ground balls.
  • In the second and third innings, Fariello struck out two and allowed zero base runners.
  • Casillas, the Spartan slayer, recorded a single in the fourth, but the Panthers remained ahead of the Spartans 1-0.
  • Tampa's Alexa Russo singled up the middle as the lead-off hitter in the fourth. However, stellar defensive work on a bunt to Fariello at pitcher and a sharp grounder to Casillas at short.
  • Despite Russo registering another hit in the sixth inning, Tech still made another impressive play on defense. Miranda Schwartz picked up the grounder and, with speed, fired it to Lorenzo, who dealt it to Hailey Mix for the double play.
  • Casillas grabbed one final hit; however, the game came down to the final three outs in the bottom of the seventh.
  • While Tampa led off with a single to center field, Fariello remained calm and turned a sacrifice bunt for the first out. The redshirt freshmen then fired a strikeout and induced a fly ball, leading the Panthers to a 1-0 shutout.

NOTABLE PANTHERS:

  • Pitching was at a premium for the Panthers. Chloe Fariello was incredible, dealing a shutout while striking out four batters. Sammy Murphy also had an impressive outing with a complete game, two-strikeout afternoon.
  • Tampa never wants to see Celeste Casillas again, compiling three more hits on six at-bats and a double
  • Malaya Nelson tallied her fourth perfect game at the plate and third 3-for-3 appearance. She also recorded an RBI.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Tech is now 54-78 against Tampa all-time and 25-39 at Naimoli Family Softball Field.
  • It's the Panthers' first series win against the Spartans since February 20, 2016, and the first at Tampa since March 1, 2015.

UP NEXT: Florida Tech concludes its regular season at home against Barry on April 25 and 26. The first game will begin at 7 pm on Friday. The Panthers will hold their Senior Day before the first game of the doubleheader on Saturday, April 26.
