AUBURNDALE, Fla. (Baseball) - Florida Tech tallied two more wins on Saturday at the
RussMatt Invitational in
Auburndale, Fla. In game one, the Panthers defeated University of Mary 8-7 and
conquered Walsh University 8-2. Under the guidance of Coach Greg
Berkemeier, the Panthers now advance to 11-5 respectively on the season.
The Panthers took a quick lead against the University of Mary when John
Sternagel hit a home run during his first at bat. Nick
Capra also singled out to left field and brought Dan
Szpik home, which gave the Panthers their lead. The Marauders answered in the bottom of the inning when they scored two runs and tied the game 2-2.
In the second inning, Florida Tech took back the lead when
Sternagel hit a sacrifice fly to left field, which brought
Erik Molina home. The Panthers continued to stretch their lead when
Reid Neal hit his first home run of the day in the fifth inning. Florida Tech generated additional runs throughout the game, while a fighting Marauder offense tried to come back in the ninth they fell short to the Panthers eight runs.
Bringing his record to 3-2 on the season, with the win, is Tyler
Deel. He tallied seven strikeouts and only allowed three runs in the five innings pitched. Luke
Lorah took the save when he only allowed one hit against the 13 batters he faced.
In the second game, Florida Tech scored three runs in the first three innings against Walsh University and kept their lead throughout the entire game. The Panthers tallied three home runs during the game from Neal andÂ
Szpik (BOT 7), followed by James
Gronberg (BOT 5). The Panthers totaled eight runs off 11 hits and held the Cavaliers to just two runs off seven hits.
Starting pitcher Andy
Marzheuser took home his fourth win of the season bringing his record to 4-0.
Marzheuser tallied six strikeouts against the 27 batters faced and held Walsh to just two runs during his seven innings pitched.
Justin Barney came in to relieve
Marzheuser in the eighth and held the Cavaliers to no hits and no runs in the final two innings.Â

homeruns, 4 RBIs),
Szpik (1 homerun, 3 RBIs) and Gronberg (1 homerun, 2 RBIs).
