BOCA RATON, Fla. – Following a tip-off that was delayed for three hours, Florida Tech (10-11, 5-8 SSC) was unable to overcome a 49-point second half performance by Lynn (11-9, 8-6 SSC) on Wednesday and fell to the Fighting Knights 94-77 at the de Hoernle Sports & Cultural Center.
A major accident and closure on I-95 caused the delayed start to the Sunshine State Conference matchup as the Panthers were forced to spend six hours on the bus on a rerouted trip down to Boca Raton. The team did not arrive on Lynn's campus until around 9:30 p.m., two hours past the scheduled tip-off.
Despite the unusual situation, Florida Tech led for 22:59 of game time and received strong performances from several of its key players.
Jordan Majors led the Panthers with 26 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.
Sam Daniel recorded 17 points and eight boards, while
Richard Coil scored 14 on 6-for-6 shooting to go along with six rebounds and three blocks.
Patrick Anderson added nine points and
Valur Valsson tallied five points, four rebounds and nine assists.
Both teams shot around 44 percent in the contest, while Lynn made an impressive 21-for-22 (.955) from the line in the game, compared to 15-for-19 (.789) by the Panthers. The Fighting Knights won the rebounding battle, 43-35, and outscored FIT, 24-6, in bench points. Each team tallied 42 points in the paint.
After facing an early five-point deficit, FIT tied the game at 7-7 on a layup by Majors at the 16:37 mark. From there the Panthers controlled much of the first half, pushing their advantage to six points several times throughout the period.
A pair of free throws by Majors just before halftime gave Florida Tech a 44-38 edge with two seconds to go. However, a three at the buzzer from Michael Baez cut the Fighting Knights' deficit to three, 44-41, as the teams went into halftime.
Lynn was able to trim the margin to one, 44-43, just 20 seconds into the second half but the Panthers responded and built their edge to a game-high eight points, 57-49, with 12:59 remaining.
A 14-6 run by the Fighting Knights tied the game at 63-63 with 10:27 left on the clock. LU continued the momentum and outscored FIT, 31-14, the remainder of the contest to earn the 17-point home victory.
Florida Tech will look to bounce back from a third straight loss when the Panthers host Saint Leo on Saturday, Feb. 3, at the Clemente Center. The matchup with the Lions is FIT's Autism Speaks Game and tip-off is set for 4 p.m. ET. Fans can access live coverage of the action at FloridaTechSports.com/live.
