Flagler Kickoff Classic Starts Off Rough for Florida Tech

Buser represents FIT in SSC leader board

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - After postponing play due to fog during Friday night's game, Florida Tech (1-4) suffered a 6-5 loss to Wingate (5-0) early this morning, followed by a narrow 2-0 decision to Valdosta State (3-3) this afternoon at Drysdale Field.

On the mound against Wingate, Ty Cohen (1-0) registered five strikeouts and seven hits in 7.2 innings pitched, while Sam Crocker (0-1) suffered his first loss after pitching an outstanding game against Valdosta. The junior out of Merritt Island struck out three and allotted solely three hits in the six innings he pitched.

At the plate, Zach Orchard led the FIT lineup after going 3-for-7 with two RBI and one double. Behind him, Jacob Buser ended the Saturday outing with a 2-for-9 performance, clutching two RBI and one home run. With his numbers, the infielder now ties for third within the SSC leader board for total home runs. Also contributing to the offensive efforts, Pierson Reynolds chipped in with a solo homerun to mark his second of the season.

On Friday night, the Panthers rallied back from a 2-0 deficit in the fourth, where Reynolds blasted a solo-homer to tie things up at two. However, in the top of the eighth, Wingate increased its stretch by three to overlap FIT 5-2.

Continuing to stay hot in the box in the ninth, Orchard brought in one run on a double to make it a 5-3 game. With a runner at second and two outs on the board, Buser blasted his second bomb of the season to put the Panthers back on track and tie the score at five. The teams entered the first extra inning, but due to harsh fog the lineups were dismissed until the next morning.

Resuming action with a 5-5 score at the top of the tenth, both teams remained scoreless until Wingate struck in the eleventh to move past FIT, 6-5.

During Game 2, the mound took full control, as both dugouts went blank for five complete innings. The only scores of the game came in the sixth and seventh, due to two Crimson and Gray fielding errors that allotted VSU with two runs.

With Valdosta leading by two, Florida Tech attempted a late rally but came up blank in the box, as the Blazers walked with a narrow win.

Tomorrow, the Panthers will face the Flagler Saints at 2 p.m. ET to conclude the Flagler Kickoff Challenge.
