MELBOURNE, Fla. -Â On Sunday afternoon, Florida Tech (4-5) capped off its first home series for the 2018 season in overpowering fashion, as the Panthers swept Drury (0-3) during the last game of the triad, 10-3.
On the mound, junior Andrew Marzheuser (1-1) earned his first win after striking out six and allowing solely three hits in the six complete innings pitched.
In the box, junior Jacob Buser brought the heat to the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and a double. With his numbers, the Staten Island native now ranks ninth inside the SSC leaderboard with a .771 slugging percentage on 35 plate appearances. Pitching in with two RBI and one double, senior Ryan Sinzenich ended the Sunday outing with a 2-for-4 performance inside the box.
To open the game, Drury broke through the score first, posting one run on the scoreboard to take the lead, 1-0. However, Florida Tech quickly roared back to tie things up, 1-1, in the bottom of the second. In the home offensive half of the third, FIT erased the balance on a sac fly that brought in three runners. Shortly after, the Crimson and Gray found home plate due to couple of Drury troubled plays that allowed Florida Tech to move past the Springfield lineup, 4-1.
In the top of the fourth, Drury rallied back with two runs to close the gap by one, but the Melbourne squad came together with a five-run fifth inning to stretch the lead, 9-3. The run started when Buser hit a single to left center to drive home the first two runs, followed by and a double down the left field line by Sinzenich, which tacked on two more to the Panthers lead. With one out and a runner at second, Raul Quintero blazed a double to right center that allowed Sinzenich to cross home plate to complete the five-run inning.
As the sixth and seventh went by blank for both dugouts, FIT clawed one more run to make it 10-3 in the bottom of the eighth with a single to center field by James Gronberg. In the final offensive frame for Drury, Justin Barney made his fourth seasonal appearance to seal the win for Florida Tech with three quick outs.
