MELBOURNE, Fla. - Florida Tech baseball came into today's game looking for its first conference sweep of the year as they took on Sunshine State Conference foe Embry-Riddle on Sunday at Andy Seminick-Les Hall Field. In a game that was dominated by both team's offenses, the Panthers found themselves on the lesser half of the scoreboard as they fell to the Eagles, 13-10.
Jake Lane started the action on the mound for the Panthers but he lasted only a third of an inning before being pulled. Lane was one of five pitchers to face the Eagles in today's game.Â
Matt Coles saw the most action for FIT as he went a total of three innings and limited ERAU to two runs and three hits while striking out six.
Justin Barney closed the game out the contest for the Panthers as he surrendered only one run and three hits to Embry-Riddle in the final two innings.
Raul Quintero led the Crimson and Gray at the plate going a perfect 4-for-4 with one RBI, off a solo homer, and two runs.Â
Daniel Szpik also had an impressive showing going 2-for-5 with one RBI and three runs.
Similar to game two of the series, Embry-Riddle jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. FIT brought the score to 4-2 in the bottom half of the inning thanks to aÂ
Ryan Sinzenich single that scoredÂ
Kevin Capella. In the very next at-bat,Â
Jacob Buser hit a grounder that allowed Szpik to cross home plate safely.Â
The Eagle's hit a three-run homer in the top of the second to extend their lead to 7-2. Florida Tech did narrow the gap to 7-5 in the bottom of the inning starting with a Capella groundout that scored Quintero. Szpik and Buser would both single later in the inning to drive home the other two runs.
Quintero got the Panthers to within one run in the bottom of the third when he smacked a dinger over the center field wall.
However, ERAU's bats came alive in the fourth and fifth inning as they scored one and three runs, respectively, to bring the score to 11-6.Â
Buser trimmed the gap to two when he launched a ball over the wall in the bottom of the sixth that brought home Capella and Szpik.
Embry-Riddle tallied another run in the top of the seventh to extend their lead to 12-9.
In the bottom of the seventh, Brown drove home Quintero. This brought the Panthers to within two of the Eagles, 12-10, as the game hit the final two innings.
Â
The Eagles tacked on the final run of the game in the top of the ninth to give them a three-run margin.
Florida Tech will turn its sights to No. 13 Flagler College as the Panthers look to avenge an earlier loss to the Saints this season. The matchup is set for Tuesday, Mar. 27, at 6 p.m. in St. Augustine, Florida.Â
