Florida Tech Drops 15-7 Loss to Catawba

Carson Clough recorded a hat trick as Panthers fall to 0-3 on road this season

SALISBURY, N.C. – Florida Tech's road struggles continued on Sunday as the Panthers fell to Catawba 15-7, concluding their weekend trip to the Tar Heel State.

FIT drops to 1-4 overall and 0-3 on the road this season, while Catawba improves to 2-3.

Carson Clough paced Florida Tech with three goals. Four other Panthers added one goal apiece, while Mason Ostrowski collected the team's only assist in the game.

David Welsh led FIT with a game-high six caused turnovers and four ground balls. Addison Abramson recorded two caused turnovers, two ground balls and a goal. Daniel Flock finished with 11 saves in goal against the Indians. His counterpart for Catawba, Kevin Geiger, ended with 17 saves in the game.

The Panthers went a combined 9-for-25 at the face off x. FIT outshot Catawba, 40-35, while the Indians gathered more ground balls, 43-27.

The score was 0-0 for almost 10 minutes before Dalton Cook found the back of the net to give Catawba a 1-0 lead with 5:10 to go in the first quarter. Just over a minute later, Nate Howard evened the game at 1-1 with an unassisted goal.

The Indians tacked on three straight goals over the final 3:31 of the first quarter and took a 4-1 edge into the second period.

A man-up goal by Clough off an assist from Ostrowski was the only score of the second quarter and the Panthers went into halftime trailing, 4-2.

The third quarter was back-and-forth between the Panthers and Indians with each team scoring three goals in the frame. The final tally of the period was another man-up goal by Clough that made it a two-point game, 7-5, heading into the fourth quarter.

The Indians pulled away early in the fourth with three unanswered goals over a 2:15 span to push their lead to 10-5. Abramson's fifth score of the season brought FIT to within four with 11:39 to go.

Catawba answered with a 4-0 run over the next 3:20 to increase its lead to 14-6 with 6:49 remaining. Justin Williams netted the final score for the Panthers with 3:16 left. The Indians tacked on one more with just over a minute to go and won by an eight-goal margin.

Florida Tech will take a 10-day layoff before traveling to Savannah, Georgia on Wednesday, Mar. 14, for a neutral site matchup with Mars Hill. Start time for the contest is set for 3 p.m.
