DENTON, TX. (Volleyball)- Wrapping up the season opener, Florida Tech (1-1) concluded at Denton, TX with a split score on Friday evening. In the first match, the Panthers fell to St. Edwards University (3-0) after a hard fight over three sets of play. However, in match two, they were able to battle their way back against Southwestern Oklahoma State (22-25, 18-25, 20-25).
Against the Hilltoppers, Florida Tech finished with a total of 39 kills topping St. Edwards University, but came up short over three sets of play. During Match 2, the Panthers put up 37 kills on 122 attempts for a .164 hitting percentage.
In the first match, senior libero
Becca Bower led the Panthers defense with 18 digs. Leading the Panthers defense in the second match, junior
Sheila Villagrasa recorded a strong 19 digs. Junior
Kyra Atkinson ended the day with an 18 digs performance.
Offensively, freshman middle hitter
Maddalena Fairchild concluded her first and second match as a panther with three blocks and four kills. Senior
Kelly Germain led the team in kills with 12 on 35 attempts, with a cumulative hitting percentage of .200. Senior
Kiersten Rosa, counted 29 assists and 5 kills contributing to the Panthers first victory of the season.
Next up, Florida Tech is back on the court tomorrow for the last day of the Spring Hill Suites Pioneer Invitational. The first match is set for 12:30 p.m. ET on Saturday Aug. 25 against Northwood University. After the completion of the match, the Panthers will take on Texas Woman's University at 8:00 p.m. ET.
