Panthers Split on the First Day of Labor Day Tournament

Daytona Beach, Fla. (Volleyball) - Concluding the first day of the Labor Day Tournament, Florida Tech (2-4) ended the day with a split score on Friday night. In the first match, the Panthers fought hard, but fell to Wilmington (3-2). However, in the last game Florida Tech refocused and end the day with a win over McKendree (25-21, 20-25, 25-22, 28-26).
 
Against the Wildcats, the Panthers were able to quickly get on the board with two consecutive wins, but were unable to get the victory against Wilmington. The Panthers had a combined 66 kills, 64 assists and 84 digs topping Wilmington in every category. During match two, Florida Tech recorded 56 kills on 157 attempts for a hitting percentage of .204.
 
Leading the Panthers defense, junior defensive specialist Kyra Atkinson recorded 19 digs in match two to move up in the Sunshine State Conference rankings to ninth place. Junior Sheila Villagrasa, who is ranked 11 on the SSC rankings for digs, recorded 11 digs in match two.
 
The Crimson and Gray, were led offensively by senior Kelly Germain, who recorded 24 kills on 52 attempts for a hitting percentage of .269 in the first match. After today, Germain is listed sixth on the SSC rankings for kills. Against McKendree, senior Kiersten Rosa had 10 kills, 25 assists and 11 digs to help the Panthers earn the victory.
 
Next up, the Crimson and Gray will be back on the court tomorrow against Bentley University and Oklahoma Baptist at Daytona Beach, Fla. The first match is set for 9:00 a.m. ET.
