MELBOURNE, Fla. – Balancing collegiate sports and any academic course load is a tall task but Florida Tech women's basketball player,
Gudlaug Juliusdottir, makes it look easy. The junior, Mechanical Engineering major, sports a 4.0 GPA which aided in her being named to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District team, announced Thursday.
The Njardvik, Iceland native was selected by eligible members of the organization, College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). This award recognizes student-athletes who excel both in the classroom and on the court.
The honor is distributed across regionally based districts and four divisions – NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA. To qualify a student-athlete must be either a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average, a minimum one full calendar year at their current institution, and must be of sophomore athletic eligibility.
Gudlaug is one of four NCAA Division II - District five honorees to possess a perfect 4.0 GPA. Due to her academic excellence, she has been a mainstay on both the Florida Tech athletic director's- and Sunshine State Conference Commissioner's honor roll throughout her time as a Panther.
Juliusdottir has been a constant fixture in the Panthers' starting five as she started 13 of the team's 25 games. She has put together a respectable season as she has averaged 4.2 points, 1.8 assists, 2.8 rebounds and 0.6 steals.
The junior will now be placed on the Google Cloud Academic All-America ballot for a chance to be named either Academic All-America first-, second- or third team (if necessary). These teams are scheduled to be announced March 12.
