Panthers Fight Back to Defeat West Alabama

HOOVER, Ala. – Florida Tech volleyball defeated West Alabama 3-2 in day one of the South Region Crossover. The Panthers were trailing 2-1 heading into the fourth set before completing the comeback, winning the fourth and fifth sets against the Tigers. With Tech's victory, they now move back to a .500 winning percentage with a 9-9 overall record.

STATS OF THE MATCH:
  • The Panthers tallied a total of 63 digs, 59 points, 48 kills, 45 assists, five service aces and six blocks in the match.
  • The Panthers took a 2-1 lead to start set one before jumping out to a huge 11-4 lead.
  • West Ala. couldn't catch up as the Panthers went ahead 24-12, before earning the 25-13 set victory.
  • Set two saw the Crimson and Grey jump out to a 6-4 lead early on.
  • West Ala. would go ahead 11-8 and didn't relinquish the lead for the remainder of the set.
  • Down 18-13, Tech pulled within three points of the Tigers making it a 20-17 set before West Ala. eventually earned the set 25-19.
  • The third set saw the Tigers take the lead early on.
  • Trailing 16-9. The Crimson and Grey earned four straight points which brought the score within three to make the score 16-13.
  • From there, the Tigers pulled ahead to claim the 25-20 set victory.
  • The fourth set proved to be a pivotal one in the match for Florida Tech.
  • Behind 5-2, the Panthers slowly edged their way back.
  • Tech brought the set to within one point (10-9) before West Ala. recorded two points to make it a 12-9 score.
  • The turning point in the match came when the Crimson and Grey went on an eight-point rally which saw the woman take a 17-12 lead.
  • Ashley Rants and Katie Erdmann both recorded kills in the mid set rally.
  • the fourth set saw back and forth action, which ultimately saw Hope Demarest record a kill to earn the 25th point of the set for Panthers to force set five.
  • The momentum from the fourth set didn't stop as Tech pulled out to a huge 7-0 lead in the final set with kills from Demarest and Rants.
  • West Ala. answered back by bringing the set to within one for a 9-8 set lead.
  • The Panthers, however, never gave up the lead.
  • With match point on the line, Demarest earned the final point for the Panthers against the Tigers in a battle of the big cats to give Tech the come from behind 3-2 match victory.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • The Panthers are now 6-2 all-time against West Alabama.
  • The Crimson and Grey's last win against the Tigers occurred on September 7, 2012.
  • Katie Erdmann ranks second In the conference in points, (295.5) kills (272), kills per set (4.00) and hitting percentage (.251)
  • Kenzie Delacher leads the SSC in assists with 624.
  • Kari Bogen's 301 digs ranks her first in the SSC in that category.
 
UP NEXT: The Panthers will participate in day two of the Southern Region Crossover on Saturday, October 15th in Hoover, Ala. at the Finley Center. The women will first go up against Valdosta State University at 10:00 AM before facing off against Christian Brothers University at 5:45 PM.
