Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Tiffany Jacobs

No. 10 Men’s Soccer Defeats Saint Leo on Senior Day

MELBOURNE, Fla.- Florida Tech honored their eight Seniors before the game with a special presentation prior to tonight's game. The Panthers defeated Saint Leo 3-2 on Saturday night during their last regular season home match.

STATS OF THE MATCH: 
  • The Panthers dominated in the first half as they outshot Saint Leo 7-1.  
  • Tech jumped out to an early lead just 9 minutes into the game when Hugo Catherine found the back of the net thanks to Jacopo Ghezzi with the assist. 
  • At the half, Tech led 1-0. 
  • The Panthers brought the momentum into the second half. 
  • Gene Lewis and Ettore Casadei connected and sent a deep pass to Joeran Osland who was right in front of the net and Osland was able to capitalize to stretch the lead to 2-0. 
  • Saint Leo responded with a goal from Felipe Ruiz at the 63' to put the Lions on the board. 
  • Tech was awarded a penalty kick in the 63rd minute of the game after Saint Leo was called for a foul in the box.  Soeren Nygaard was able to convert to give Tech a 3-1 lead. 
  • It was a physical match between the two teams with six cautions being handed out, three to each team. 
  • Unfortunately for the Panthers, Nygaard received a red card at the 76', resulting in an ejection. 
  • Tech was forced to play the remainder of the game with 10 men. 
  • Saint Leo took advantage and in the 79th minute of the game a cross by Mauro Diaz landed at the foot of Luca Tiozza and Tiozza fired one into the back of the next to close the gap and the score was now 3-2. 
  • Both teams battled for the next 10 minutes with Saint Leo trying to find that equalizer. 
  • With one minute remaining, Saint Leo had an opportunity to score and tie things up, but Luis Tovar Romero, Sr. came up with the biggest save of the game to secure the win for the Panthers. 
  • Tovar Romero, Sr. recorded two saves, while Saint Leo's Ricardo Ceballos recorded seven saves. 
  • The Panthers had the edge in shots 15-9 and shots on goal 10-5.  
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • Florida Tech is now 12-14-3 all- time against Saint Leo University. 
  • This is the first time the men's soccer team has gone unbeaten during the regular season at home since 1994. 
  • This is the second game Tech has scored three goals. 
  • The Panthers lead the SSC in goals allowed with just 9 goals allowed through 12 games. 
  • Catherine scored his first goal of the season. 
  • Ghezzi recorded his first assist of the season. 
  • Osland picked up his second goal of the season. 
  • Casadei and Lewis both recorded their second assist of the season.
  • Nygaard recorded his first goal of the season.
UP NEXT: Florida Tech will travel to Tampa to face the Spartans on Tuesday, Oct. 25. Kick-off is set for 7pm.
