Panthers Take the Regular Season Sweep of the Sailfish

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Florida Tech volleyball team hosted a whiteout Friday night against Palm Beach Atlantic (PBA) where the Panthers came up victorious in a 3-2 five set thriller. Tech went up 2-0 in the match before the Sailfish came back to win the next two sets to tie it up at two all for the match before the Panthers took the fifth and final set 15-12.

STATS OF THE MATCH:
  • Set one started off with Florida Tech getting out to a 5-2 lead before the Sailfish tied up the match 5-5.
  • A couple of three point runs for the Panthers pushed them ahead to a 12-7 lead.
  • The Sailfish would rally back leading the set for the first time all match 17-16.
  • The Crimson and Grey then went on a six-point run thanks to four attack errors from PBA, a Katie Erdmann kill assisted by Kenzie Delacher and a service ace from Ashley Rants to put the panthers up 22-17
  • With Tech ahead 24-20 the women closed out the set thanks to another Erdmann kill as the Crimson and Grey took the lead in the match 1-0.
  • The second set saw the Panthers jump ahead once again 5-2 and didn't let PBA take the lead all set. The Sailfish came to within one point off three unanswered points to make it a 7-6 match.
  • A three-point run from the Panthers would later put them ahead by five at 13-8.
  • The Crimson and Grey women would take their largest lead of the set going up by seven points for a 20-13 lead. The Sailfish brought the set back to within three points at 22-19.
  • With Tech ahead 24-21 an attack error by PBA put the Panthers up 2-0 in match.
  • The third set started off with the home team yet again taking a big lead up 6-2 until PBA came back to score eight of the next nine points and go up 10-7.
  • The Panthers tried their best to come back tie the match up for the first time since trailing in the set at 20-20 each.
  • The Sailfish would eventually jump ahead scoring four out of the next six points to lead 24-22 before scoring the final kill taking set three while still trailing in the match 2-1.
  • The fourth set saw PBA take the big lead early on going up 7-3, before Tech came to within one at 8-7.
  • The Sailfish would score five straight points right after to go up 13-7
  • The Panthers brought the match back to within one still trailing 14-13
  • PBA went on to score eight of the next 10 points pushing their lead in the set to 22-15.
  • The Sailfish eventually tied the match up after taking set four 25-19 to send the match to the fifth and final set.
  • The fifth set saw a lot of intense action as PBA jumped out to the 2-0 lead prior to the Crimson and Grey making a run to tie the match up at 4-4 and later taking the lead 8-5.
  • After six back and forth points the Panthers still were up on the Sailfish 11-9 before scoring two points to go up 13-9.
  • With the Tech ahead 14-12 and at match point a kill from Devyn Glassgold put a halt to the Sailfish's comeback as the Panthers took the set 15-12 and winning the match 3-2.
  • Freshman Devyn Glassgold recorded a career high 11 kills in tonight's match.
  • Kenzie Delacher tied a career best 50 assists tonight as well.
  • For the third time this season, Katie Erdmann tied her career high number in kills with 27 kills and nine errors in 65 attempts for a .277 hitting percentage in the match.
  • With five kills and one error on nine attempts, Kayla Mastin recorded a team high .444 hitting percentage while having a season best six total blocks, all assists.
  • Lilian Muszynski also recorded a season high in blocks with five block assists and two solo blocks for seven total blocks.
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • The Panthers volleyball team is now 16-33 against PBA dating back to 1987. The last time Tech defeated the Sailfish at home was October 1, 2010.
  • The last time the Crimson and grey swept PBA in the regular season dates to 1998.
  • Erdman's 27 kills in five sets ties her with her for second with herself in the SSC with the most kills in a five-set match. Previously she recorded 27 kills in five sets at Rollins on September 10, 2022.
  • Muszynski's seven total blocks in five sets ties her for sixth in the SSC for blocks in a five-set match.
UP NEXT: The Panthers will next host No. 16 Barry University Saturday, October 29th at 4:00 PM in the Charles and Ruth Clemente Center Gymnasium for another Sunshine State Conference matchup.
