Tech Take Game 1 from Mocs Improving to 24-7

Castillo’s 5 RBI carry Panthers to 13th win in 15 games

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

STATS OF GAME:
  • Florida Southern started the game hot with a two-run homer to left field by Duncan Hunter in the bottom of the first, scoring Jordan Gaynor in the process, giving the Mocs a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
  • The Panthers answered in the top of the second when Dylan Dohanos walked, advancing Sam Schner to second, Alec Eldridge to third, and plating Dylan Owens, cutting the deficit in half.
  • Paul Castillo hit a RBI double to left field, advancing Dohanos to third, and scoring both Schner and Eldridge, allowing the Panthers to take a 3-2 lead.
  • Jakob Newton then hit a RBI double to left field, plating both Castillo and Dohanos, extending the Panther lead 5-2.
  • Connor Berry homered to left field in the bottom of the second, cutting the Panther lead 5-3.
  • The Panther's would add three more runs in the top of the sixth, thanks to Paul Castillo's three-run homer to right center field, plating both Dohanos and Schner, making the Panther lead 8-3.
  • The Mocs would answer in the bottom of the sixth with Hunter's double down the left field line, allowing Nathan Chevalier and Gaynor to score, cutting the Panther lead 8-5.
  • Alec Eldridge hit a RBI double to center field, scoring Brett Parrish, and advanced to third on the throw.
  • Diego Garcia gave the Panthers their final run of the game when he singled through the left side, plating Eldridge.
  • Joey Hecht pitched five innings, allowing five hits, five runs, struck out one, and threw 63 pitches, earning the win.
  • Danny Vassallo pitched two innings, allowing five hits, two runs, and struck out three.
  • Andres Rodriguez closed the game for the Panthers, allowing only one hit, no runs, and struck out three to earn the save.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • This was the first matchup between Florida Tech and Florida Southern since May 5, 2021. The Mocs now lead the all-time series 104-34.
  • Jakob Newton extended his on base streak to 30 with his double to left field in the top of the second.
  • Dylan Owens' hitting streak ended at 12 but extended his on base streak to 13 with his walk in the top of the second.

UP NEXT:  The Panthers return to action on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 P.M. for a Sunshine State Conference doubleheader against Florida Southern at Henley Field.
