Patelli Continues High Hitting Percentage Performance as Mocs Defeat Panthers

LAKELAND, FLA. – Chiara Patelli of the Florida Tech Panthers volleyball program continued to keep up her high hitting percentage on Friday night as Tech traveled to Lakeland to take on the Moccasins in an SSC matchup.

STATS OF THE MATCH:

First Set:
  • The Panthers leaped out to a 4-2 lead which was highlighted by Chiara Patelli and Devyn Glassgold.
  • Florida Southern countered with four straight points to go ahead 6-4.
  • As Tech trailed 8-6, six straight points were earned by the Panthers with three kills from Antia Vallecas Rodriguez, one kill each from Cordelia Kearns and Patelli, and a service ace by Kari Voelstad Bogen to take a 12-8 lead.
  • Another big run by the Crimson and Gray had Tech ahead 19-12 with kills from María Jesús Muñoz and Patelli.
  • Down by seven, Florida Southern attempted to make a comeback, but Tech's offense was too much early on as the Panthers were able to win the first set 25-19.
  • Vallecas Rodriguez scored the set point off of a kill.
 
Second Set:
  • The second set began with the Panthers down by five, 8-3, highlighted by two kills from Mackenzie Petermann.
  • Tech attempted to storm back and was able to come within two points at 11-9 after Patelli recorded her second kill of the set.
  • The Moccasins tallied five of the next six points to pull away 16-10.
  • Down by their largest lead of the set at 20-13, the Panthers dug deep and rallied back to record eight straight points to go ahead 21-20.
  • The Panthers rally came thanks to two kills from Patelli, one kill from Lexi Lueger and back-to-back service aces by Kenzie Delacher.
  • The Mocs then answered, scoring four straight points to come within set point before a Patelli kill halted Southern's run.
  • Petermann closed out the set for Southern with a kill to win the set 25-21 and tie the match at 1-1.
 
Third Set:  
  • Set three began with a 7-3 run by Florida Southern until Tech answered back to tie it 7-7.
  • After back-and-forth scoring, the Mocs managed to jump ahead 14-10.
  • A kill from Vallecas Rodriguez put the Panthers down by just three at 18-15.
  • Five unanswered points allowed the Mocs to come just two points shy of winning the third set as they pulled ahead 23-17.
  • Tech recorded four of the next six points but couldn't take the third set as Florida Southern would go ahead in the match 2-1, following a 25-19 victory in the third.
 
Third Set:  
  • The fourth set played out with the Crimson and Gray going up 9-6 early in the fourth thanks to two streaks of scoring three points in a row.
  • Southern recaptured the lead 10-9 after scoring four straight.
  • Tied 11-11, the Mocs scored two of their next three points off kills from Madison Fowler and Elena Djokovic to lead 14-11 in what would be the final lead change of the match.
  • Down 16-14 after a kill from Lueger, two kills from Zoe Lowe highlighted the Mocs next four-point run to lead the Panthers 20-14.
  • Three attacking errors in a row by Southern helped the Panthers come back to trail by just three at 20-17.
  • Tech kept the match entertaining as kills from Kearns and Patelli allowed the Panthers to come within three points of taking the lead while still down 23-21.
  • A Petermann kill followed by a service ace from Caroline Chambers concluded the match with the Mocs defeating the Panthers 25-21 in the fourth set and taking the match 3-1.
 
NOTABLE PANTHERS
  • Chiara Patelli was the Panther's most outstanding offensive player in the match as she recorded a team-high 12 kills and three solo blocks with three block assists for 16.5 points.
  • Her 12 kills and one error in just 18 attempts averaged her a .611 hitting percentage.
  • Lexi Lueger concluded the match with eight kills and no errors in 24 attempts for a .333 hitting percentage.
  • Kenzie Delacher tallied a team-high 19 set assists with Jeanne Hassoun recording 15 assists herself.
  • Delacher led the team with four service aces while Kari Voelstad Bogen tallied the most digs on the team with 20.
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • Florida Tech moves to 9-74 all-time against Florida Southern with the Mocs having won the previous 11 meetings.
  • Tech's last win against Southern came back on September 28, 2019, in Lakeland.
  • The Panthers are now 2-40 all-time at Florida Southern.
  • Chiara Patelli's .338 hitting percentage this season is good for the fourth highest in the SSC.
  • With three solo blocks tonight, Patelli now has 30 this season which is the most amongst any player in the SSC.
  • Her 30 blocks also tie her for the 7th most solo blocks in a single season in Panther's history with Alys Thomas who tallied 30 backs in 2002.
  • Kenzie Delacher's 35 service aces this season is good for the sixth most in the SSC with the sixth highest aces per set, with a .39 average.
