Patelli's Career Night Lifts Panthers Past Buccaneers

MIAMI SHORES, FLA. – The Florida Tech volleyball team picked up a Sunshine State Conference (SSC) win Saturday evening. Traveling down to Miami Shores, Fla. The Panthers defeated Barry University in four sets. Chiara Patelli of the Panthers recorded career-high numbers with 22.5 points, 15 kills, five solo blocks and three block assists for eight total blocks. FINAL: Florida Tech 3, Barry 1  Records: Florida Tech (9-17, 3-13 SSC), Barry (9-16, 3-13 SSC) Locations: Health & Sports Center | Miami Shores, Fla. STATS OF THE MATCH: First Set:
  • Barry and Tech battled it out early on tied 4-4 before the Panthers gained a three-point advantage over the Buccaneers making it 7-4 highlighted by a service ace from Jeanne Hassoun.
  • The Panthers maintained the lead leading 12-8 before two kills from Cordelia Kearns and Chiara Patelli led to a Barry timeout.
  • Off the timeout, Kenzie Delacher recorded a service ace to put Tech ahead 13-8.
  • A combined 10 kills between both teams would still see Tech lead 18-13. 
  • In the run, Kearns recorded two kills with Patelli, Lexi Lueger and  María Jesús Muñoz all tallying a kill.
  • Four points in a row by Barry would see the Buccaneers comeback to trail by just one following two kills by Varvara Osychenko.
  • The Panthers battled back to jump ahead 21-17 highlighted by a kill and solo block by Patelli.
  • Eight straight points by the Buccaneers would guide them to win the first set 25-21 and take a 1-0 lead in the match. 
  • Diana Akopova highlighted Barry's run by recording five kills to close out the set.
  Second Set:
  • The Panthers and Buccaneers continued their close match to start the second, tied 6-6 before Barry pulled out to an 8-6 lead.
  • Following two kills from Kearns and Patelli, the Panthers managed to tie the set 9-9.
  • Trailing 12-11, the Panthers regained the lead to go ahead 14-12 off of kills from Lueger, Muñoz and Devyn Glassgold.
  • Muñoz and Glassgold would go on to put the Panthers ahead 16-13.
  • Barry was able to make a comeback to trail by one, 18-17, before Tech rallied off four straight points to lead 23-17 highlighted by two kills a piece from Antia Vallecas Rodriguez and Patelli.
  • Florida Tech closed out the set, scoring the final two points off kills Vallecas Rodriguez and Muñoz.
  • The Panthers captured the set 25-18 to tie the match 1-1.
  Third Set:  
  • A quick 6-0 run by the Panthers started off the third set.
  • Patelli was a large part of the Panther's early offense recording two solo blocks and two kills.
  • Two kills from Muñoz helped the Panthers by putting them ahead 9-4.
  • Osychenko helped the Buccaneers make a comeback effort to trail by on, down 10-9.
  • A service ace by Delacher would put Tech ahead 13-11 before Barry would take a 15-13 lead over Tech.
  • As the Panthers trailed 16-14, four unanswered points would put Tech ahead 18-16 and later 20-17.
  • The Panthers would go ahead to set point, leading 24-22, until the Buccaneers rallied back to lead 25-24.
  • Tech and Barry would have a thrilling finish to end the third set tied at 25-25, 26-26 and 27-27 before a kill from Kearns would put Tech within set point, followed by block assists from Glassgold and Kearns to allow Tech to secure the set 29-27 and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
  Fourth Set:
  • The fourth set for Tech saw them trail 4-2 to start out, before scoring four I a row to take a 6-4 lead over the Buccaneers highlighted by a Glassgold kill.
  • A service ace by Kari Voelstad Bogen allowed Tech to lead 9-6.
  • Barry brought the setback to just one point as the Crimson and Gray still led 14-13.
  • A Lueger/Patelli block assist would give Tech it's third straight point to allow Tech to lead 19-15.
  • The Panthers pushed their lead 21-16 before four points by the Buccaneers brought Barry to trail by just one, down 21-20.
  • Kills from Glassgold and Muñoz allowed the Panthers to reach match point ahead 24-20.
  • The Buccaneers looked to try to tie it up, recording two points on match points but a kill from Muñoz would seal the deal, giving Tech the 25-22 win in the fourth set and win the match 3-1.
  NOTABLE PANTHERS
  • Chiara Patelli was dominant for the Panthers, having a career night, recording 15 kills and eight blocks for 22.5 points. At the net, she recorded five solo blocks and three block assists with one service ace. 
  • Patelli finished the match with a .355 hitting percentage from 15 kills and four errors in 31 attack attempts.
  • Devyn Glassgold finished the match with a .538 hitting percentage from eight kills and one error in 13 attempts.
  • Muñoz tied Patelli as the team lead in kills, each recording 15.
  • Kearns managed 14 kills with a .333 hitting percentage, along with two block assists and one solo block for 16 points.
  • Vallecas Rodriguez was the fourth Panther to record double-digit kills in the match as she tallied 10 kills.
  • The setting duo of Kenzie Delacher and Jeanne Hassoun combined for 50 set assists with Delacher recording 28 assists and Hassoun assisting on 22 kills.
  • Delacher also led the team with 19 digs.
  BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • With 27 solo blocks this season, Patelli is now tied for the 8th most solo blocks in a single season by a Panther along with Laura Gatz who hit the same number in 1999.
  • She now has the fourth-highest hitting percentage in the conference (.327).
  • Delacher's 31 service aces is the 8th most in the SSC this season.
  • Courtney Caper's 312 digs are the 7th most in the SSC.
  • Kearns has the 9th most kills in the SSC this season (283).
  • The Panthers are now 10-59 all-time against the Buccaneers.
  • It is the first time since 2008 that the Panthers have swept Barry in a season series.
  • Tech is now 4-26 all-time at Barry. 
  • It is the Crimson and Grays' first win in Miami Shores since October 23, 2013.
