Big Sixth Inning Leads to Panthers Defeat of Eagles

MELBOURNE, Fla. - After winning the first game of the series, Tech hosted Embry-Riddle for a Saturday afternoon showdown. The Panthers exploded for seven runs in the sixth inning to clinch the series win.  

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

Records: Florida Tech (18-10, 7-4 SSC) | Embry Riddle (12-14, 2-9 SSC) 
Location: Andy Seminick-Les Hall Field | Melbourne, Fla.  

STATS OF GAME: 

  • The Panthers threatened to score multiple times in the first few innings, but were thrown out four times on the bases early on. 
  • Embry-Riddle took its first lead of the weekend on a RBI single to center field from Alex Britton in the fourth inning.  
  • Tech tied the game in the sixth inning on an infield error that scored Josh Ford.  
  • Three bases-loaded walks, a 2-RBI single from Gabe Garrett, and a RBI single from Josh Ford extended Tech's lead to 7-1 later in the sixth inning.  
  • The Panthers added two more runs in the seventh inning on a bases-loaded walk and a RBI groundout by Garrett.  
  • The Eagles added a run in the second inning on a RBI double to left field from Timo Aracena. 
  • RHP Danny Vassallo earned the win for the Panthers going six and one-third innings while yielding one earned run on six hits. The defending SSC Pitcher of the Week struck out four.  
  • RHP Tyler Vermillion pitched two and two-thirds innings in relief of Vassallo. He allowed one earned run on two hits with two strikeouts.  
  • RHP Conner Dunnam took the loss for the Eagles. He gave up three runs, all of which were unearned, in five and two-thirds innings.  
  • Tech recorded nine hits on the day with Josh Ford leading the way with three base knocks.  
  • Gavin McGowan got the start at first base and walked three times at the plate.  

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE: 

  • The Panthers improve to 22-20 all-time against Embry-Riddle.  
  • Today marked the longest outing of Vassallo's career. 
  • Three hits tie a career-high for Ford. 

UP NEXT: Florida Tech returns to action tomorrow, March 26th for the final game of the weekend against Embry-Riddle. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. from Andy Seminick-Les Hall Field.
