Baseball Leaves Eckerd With Two Wins

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - After falling on Friday night at Eckerd, the Panthers went into the Saturday doubleheader needing two wins to clinch its fourth SSC series victory of the year. Tech needed 11 innings to get the first win but carried over the momentum to the day's second game to grab another win.  

INSIDE THE MATCHUP: 
Game 1 Final (11 innings): Florida Tech 8, Eckerd 7 
Game 2 Final: Florida Tech 13, Eckerd 8

STATS OF GAME 1: 

  • The Panthers scored three runs in the third inning on an Alec Eldridge RBI single, an infield error, and a RBI fielder's choice from Austin Sewell.  
  • The Tritons responded with a 2-run home run from Michael Ballard in the third inning.  
  • In the fourth inning, Jason Blackstone hit a 3-run home run to left field, his second homer of the season. 
  • Tech took a 7-2 lead in the fifth inning when Gavin McGowan brought in Josh Ford with a RBI single to left field.  
  • The Tritons scored two runs in the sixth and one run in the eighth to trail the Panthers by two runs going into the ninth inning. 
  • With two outs in the ninth inning, a RBI double from Tyler Cox and a RBI single from Kyle Abbott for Eckerd sent the game to extra innings.  
  • The game was decided on a RBI sac fly to right field in the 11th inning from McGowan that scored Brett Parrish.  
  • Eckerd got a runner on in the 11th with two outs, but RHP Ethan Stephens ended the game with a swinging strikeout.   
  • RHP Danny Vassallo started for Tech and threw five and one-third innings. He allowed four earned runs on eight hits. The junior struck out four and walked two. 
  • LHP Aidan Pryzgoda recorded two outs without giving up a base runner in the sixth inning.  
  • RHP Ridge Skarbek threw three innings and gave up three earned runs on four hits. He recorded one strikeout and one walk.  
  • Stephens was the winning pitcher for the Panthers. He threw two scoreless innings to end the game while allowing just one hit with four strikeouts. 
  • The Panthers tallied 11 hits with Blackstone, Ford, and Tate Hansen each having two hits.  

STATS OF GAME 2: 

  • Ford got the Panthers on the board in the first inning with a RBI single to center field that scored Alec Eldridge.  
  • A 2-RBI double from Cole Patrick highlighted a four-run third inning for Tech that gave it a 5-0 advantage. 
  • Kam Gelwick scored the Tritons first run with a solo home run in the third inning.  
  • Eldridge delivered for the Panthers with a RBI double to right field that scored Blackstone in the fourth inning.  
  • A 2-run from home run from Kyle Ericson and a RBI single by Michael Ballard for the Tritons cut the Panthers lead to 6-4 in the fourth inning.  
  • Tech responded with a 2-run home run to left field from Patrick, his second of the weekend.  
  • Eckerd added two runs in the fifth inning to get back to within two runs of Tech.  
  • Across the sixth and seventh innings, Tech scored three runs to take a 11-6 lead. Ford, Gabe Garrett, and Sam Schner each had RBI hits.  
  • Ericson hit his second home run of the game, a solo shot, for Eckerd in the seventh inning. 
  • The Panthers got their final two runs of the day on a 2-RBI single up the middle from Hansen.  
  • Abbott homered to left field in the eighth inning, but it was too little, too late for the Tritons. 
  • RHP Dylan Cleveland was given the win for the Panthers. He gave up four earned runs on nine hits in three and one-third innings. The freshman struck out two and walked two.  
  • Pryzgoda pitched two-thirds of an inning and gave up two earned runs. He didn't give up a base hit but hit two batters. 
  • RHP Zach Rodgers worked two and one-third innings, allowing one earned run on six hits. He struck out two batters.  
  • RHP Carter Cooke pitched one and two-thirds innings. He allowed one earned run on three hits with one strikeout.  
  • RHP Christian Galindo threw a scoreless ninth inning and gave up just one hit.  
  • The Panthers tallied 15 hits with Eldridge leading the way with four hits. Patrick led the team with 4 RBIs.  

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE: 

  • The Panthers move to 69-53 all-time against the Tritons.  
  • Patrick extends his home run tally to four, which leads the team.  
  • 13 runs in game two, is a season-high for a conference game. 
  • Tech has won four of five SSC series and sits in fourth place by itself in the conference standings.  

UP NEXT: Florida Tech returns to action Friday, April 7, at home against Tampa. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. from Andy Seminick-Les Hall Field.
