Men’s Soccer Takes Down No. 24 Lander in Season Opener

WINGATE, N.C.- The Florida Tech men's soccer team traveled to Wingate, North Carolina to kick off their 2023 season against No. 24 Lander. The Panthers dominated the Bearcats, 5-1.

STATS OF THE MATCH:
  • The Panthers put pressure on the Bearcats right from the beginning. Tech held a 10-4 advantage on shots in the first half.
  • Joeran Osland fired off a shot in the third minute of play, but Lander's goalkeeper Juan Rodriguez came up with a save to keep Tech off the board.
  • In the 15th minute, Ettore Casadei put the Panthers on top 1-0.
  • A penalty kick by Christian Hatley tied the game 1-1 in the 39th minute.
  • Teams went into the half tied at 1-1.
  • Tech brought even more momentum into the second half, outshooting Lander 9-4. One minute into the second half, a corner kick by Osland found Sjur Drechsler in the perfect position to head it past the keeper and into the net.
  • In the 53rd minute, Oskar Ihlen scored his first goal as a Panther to give Tech a 3-1 lead.
  • Florida Tech didn't allow the Bearcats to get a shot off in the second half until the 82nd minute.
  • Fabio Amaral joined in on the action, scoring another goal for the Panthers in the 77th minute. He was assisted by Hugo Catherine and Osvaldo Santana.
  • With just seconds to go, Santana scored his first goal as a Panther to put Tech on top 5-1.
  • After 90 minutes, Tech outshot Lander 19-8 with 11 on goal. Lander led in corner kicks, 7-3.
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • Florida Tech is 2-1-1 in the all-time series record. This is the first meeting between the two teams since last year's NCAA Tournament.
  • This is the first meeting between the two teams since last year's NCAA Tournament.
  • Tonight's win is the Panther's 14th season opener win, dating back to 2009.
  • Iker Bastida made five saves in his debut with the Panthers.
  • Five goals is the most Florida Tech has scored in a season opener since Sept.4, 2016 at Union
