Guzman Goes Deep in Loss to Barry

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Florida Tech baseball team fell to the Barry Buccaneers, 5-2, on Friday night in game one of its three-game weekend conference series.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: Florida Tech 2, Barry 5
Records: Florida Tech (16-24, 8-14 SSC), Barry (21-18, 9-10 SSC)
Location: Andy Seminick-Les Hall Field | Melbourne, Fla.

STATS OF THE GAME:
  • Both teams put up a scoreless first frame, but Barry threatened in the top of the second with runners on second and third with one out.
  • Starting pitcher for Tech, Josh Beck, bared down and struck out one batter and induced a ground out to the next to get out of the inning unscathed.
  • Barry got on the board first in the top of the third with three runs on four hits.
  • In the top of the fifth, the Bucs tacked on one more run with an RBI single to take a 4-0 lead.
  • In the bottom of the sixth inning, Carlos Guzman smashed a towering solo homerun to centerfield to put the Panthers on the board and erase the shutout.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, Gabe Garrett cut the lead in half with an RBI single that plated Jack Matousek and brought Tech within two, 4-2.
  • A pinch-hit RBI single in the top of the ninth pushed Barry's lead out to 5-2.
  • Tech looked to rally in the bottom of the ninth. A walk, a hit-by-pitch, and an error loaded the bases with two outs, but the next Panther in the inning would fly out to end the threat and give the game its final score of 5-2.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Florida Tech moves to 72-67 all-time against Barry, including 41-29 at home against the Bucs.
  • The Panthers have won six of the past 10 series, including three of the last five in Melbourne.
  • Jason Blackstone has reached base safely in 33 straight games played.
  • Carlos Guzman is now tied for the team lead in home runs with four.
