Panthers Fall to Tritons on the Road

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Florida Tech baseball team hit the road for a midweek non-conference matchup with the Eckerd on Tuesday afternoon but fell to Tritons, 6-1.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: Florida Tech 1, Eckerd 6
Records: Florida Tech (16-27, 8-16 SSC), Eckerd (16-23, 5-16 SSC)
Location: Turley Athletic Complex | St. Petersburg, Fla.

STATS OF THE GAME:
  • Eckerd jumped out a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first innings with an RBI single from Alex Brazer.
  • Tech answered quickly in the top of the second after Jason Blackstone sent an RBI single into center field to plate Tate Hansen and knot the game at 1-1.
  • The Tritons led off the bottom half of the frame with a single, but the Panthers turned a 6-4-3 double play in the next at-bat and Mitch Harding struck out the final batter of the inning to keep the game at 1-1.
  • In the bottom of the third, a fielding by the Panthers allowed a run to cross and give Eckerd a 2-1 lead. A few batters later, a single through the right side brought home another run to push the lead to 3-1.
  • In the top of the fourth with two outs, Gabe Garrett looked to score on a base hit from Jason Blackstone, but a solid throw from the Triton left fielder was able to just beat Garrett sliding into the plate and ended the inning.
  • Harding sat Eckerd down in order over the next two innings, picking up a strikeout along the way.
  • Back-to-back bases-loaded walks issued to the Tritons in the bottom of the sixth tacked on two more runs to push the lead to 5-1.
  • With no outs, Ridge Skarbek settled in on the mound for Tech and induced a pop-up and a 6-4-3 double play to the next two Eckerd hitters to escape the jam.
  • Eckerd added a run in the bottom of the eighth with a two-out RBI single to make it a 6-1 game.
  • Marshall Burke laced a two-out double in the top of the ninth, but that was all Tech could manage after the next Panther struck out to end the game.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Florida Tech moves to 71-57 all-time against Eckerd, including a 31-21 record on the road in St. Petersburg.
  • Jason Blackstone has now reached base safely in 36 straight games played.
