Tech Drops Hard Fought Match Vs No. 1 Tampa

Melbourne, Florida – The Panthers took the court this afternoon for another Sunshine State Conference matchup. Tech took on the Tampa Spartans, who entered today's match as the number one team in the nation.

MATCH NOTES:
First Set: Florida Tech 20, Tampa 25
  • This afternoon's highly touted contest started out fast with both sides trading three straight kills.
  • Cordelia Kearns, Devyn Glassgold and Elisa Broggio all got on the board but the Panthers still found themselves down 8-6 early in the set.
  • A small run by Tech saw them tie the set up at 11-11 with kills from Kearns and Glassgold, plus a service ace from Broggio.
  • The Panthers took their first lead of the set a point later after a Spartan's attack error.
  • Both sides began trading points as the scoreline would be knotted at 12-12, 14-14 and 16-16.
  • After a 4-1 Tampa run, the Panthers came right back with back-to-back kills form Kearns to pull within one point.
  • Unfortunately for the Panthers, Tampa put an end to the Tech run and closed out the first set on a 5-1 run.
Second Set: Florida Tech 19, Tampa 25
  • The beginning of the second set was similar to the first with both sides trading kills through the first six points for a 3-3 early tie.
  • Tampa then opened up a multi-point lead with a 4-1run before Tech came storming backto tie the set up at 7-7.
  • From there, Tampa went on yet another 4-1 run to take back the lead.
  • The Panthers got multiple kills from Kearns and a block from Hadley Waldren but the Spartans began to run away with the second set.
  • Despite a small comeback effort from Tech, the Spartans used an 8-2 run to take the second set and build a 2-0 match lead.
Third Set: Florida Tech 25, Tampa 14
  • Needing a response after going down 2-0 in the match, the Panthers opened up the third set with three straight points.  
  • However, the Tech lead did not last long as Tampa came right back and used a 5-1 run to take their first lead of the set.
  • Despite kills from Maiella Riva and Cordelia Kearns, the Spartan run continued as they amassed a ten-point lead (18-8).
  • The Panthers got back line held strong, but the front row of Tampa held the Tech hitters in check as they went on to take the third set and the match.
NOTABLE PANTHERS: UP NEXT: Tech will head back out on the road for a Halloween match against Saint Leo. The Panthers will look to complete the season sweep of the Lions on Friday, October 31st at 6 PM.
