Baseball Drops Back and Forth Series Opener at NSU

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Florida Tech's power and resiliency were on full display in Friday night's series opener at Nova Southeastern. While the Panthers came back multiple times over the game's final four innings, they also left multiple chances to take the lead on the base paths, and in the end, an error in the bottom of the 10th gave the Sharks a 6-5 victory.

Final (10 Innings)Florida Tech 5, Nova Southeastern 6
Records: Florida Tech (8-9, 1-3 SSC) | Nova Southeastern (10-5, 4-0 SSC)
Location: Fort Lauderdale, Fla. | NSU Baseball Complex

STATS OF THE GAME:
  • Zeth Rodriguez opened the scoring in the bottom of the third with a one-out solo homer to left. This was the first earned run Jacob Pino had allowed in 14 1/3 IP.
  • Cole Patrick led off the top of the seventh with his second home run of the season, a towering shot to left off of Sharks starting pitcher Keyler Gonzalez.
  • The Panthers had the chance to tack on and take the lead as they had runners at the corners with one out but were unable to bring the runners home.
  • Boris Pena restored NSU's lead in the bottom half of the inning with a one-out solo blast to left center.
  • The Shark lineup gave themselves cushion with two out in the inning thanks to a walk, a stolen base with a throwing error, a Rodriguez RBI single that brought Pino's night to a close, followed by a Justin Wachs two-run homer off of Trenten Anderson to make it 5-1.
  • The Crimson and Gray response was immediate in the following inning as Pedro Figueroa led off with a walk, Carlos Guzman singled and pinch-hitter Noah Burke brought everybody home with a drive down the right field line that stayed fair for his first home run of the season to make it 5-4.
  • Julian Hernandez came in from the bullpen to retire the next three Panther batters to get out of the frame.
  • Gabe Garrett led off the top of the ninth with a walk and then advanced to a second on a wild pitch by new NSU pitcher Carlos Nolasco. He then moved over to third when pinch-hitter Adrian Dominguez sacrificed him over.
  • Jaden Hill singled up the middle to drive in Garrett and level the game at five.
  • Figueroa then struck out and Guzman fell just short of a home run with a drive that died at the wall in the deepest part of the park in center.
  • Pena led off the bottom of the ninth against Ethan Stephens with a double to right center.
  • Stephens recovered by inducing a pop out bunt, striking out Ronny Medina and getting Rodriguez grounding out to first to end the inning.
  • Noah Burke led off the top of the 10th with a bunt single but was unable to advance due to a pair of strikeouts and getting picked off to end the inning.
  • In the bottom of the inning, Xavier Moronta reached on an error with one out. A hit batsmen and a walk then loaded the bases for Ty Torti.
  • Torti hit a potential inning-ending double play ball, but the throw to second went into left field, allowing Moronta to head home with the winning run.

NOTABLE PANTHERS:
  • Noah Burke led the Tech lineup with two hits for his first multi-hit game of the season, including a home run.
  • Cole Patrick also recorded a home run.
  • Marshall Burke went two-for-five at the dish for his second consecutive multi-hit game and third of the campaign. The sophomore also swiped his first base of the season.
  • Jacob Pino threw six and two-thirds innings on the mound, his third consecutive start with at least six innings pitched, surrendering four runs on six hits while striking out five and walking just one.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Florida Tech moves to 54-59 all-time against Nova Southeastern.
  • Tech is now 24-36 at NSU.
  • Cole Patrick's home run was the ninth of his Florida Tech career, the most by any Panther this decade, beating the previous high mark of eight set by Brett Parrish.
