Lenzen’s Gem Earns Baseball a Split at NSU

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Panther bats were active throughout Saturday's doubleheader at Nova Southeastern, and while starting pitching helped them take Game One, 8-2, trouble bringing home runners in Game Two allowed the Sharks to earn the series win, 6-4.

GAME ONE:
STATS OF THE GAME:
Final: Florida Tech 8, Nova Southeastern 2
Records: Florida Tech (9-9, 2-3 SSC) | Nova Southeastern (10-6, 4-1 SSC)
Location: Fort Lauderdale, Fla. | NSU Baseball Complex

STATS OF THE GAME:
  • Tech made its breakthrough in the top of the third inning against Sharks starter Kader Rabagh when Gabe Garrett, Conner Wiggins and Jaden Hill all singled to load the bases for Adrian Domingiuez.
  • Dominguez lifted a sacrifice fly to left, allowing Garrett to sprint home with the game's first run.
  • NSU responded immediately in the bottom of the third with Zeth Rodriguez leading off the bottom of the frame with a double to center off of Panthers starting pitcher Aidan Lenzen.
  • Rodriguez advanced to third on a dropped strike three and then came home to tie the game on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Xavier Moronta.
  • Cole Patrick led off the top of the fourth with a single to left and then advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt.
  • Noah Burke made it count by launching his second home run in as many days, a towering two-run shot to right to put the Crimson and Gray back on top, 3-1.
  • Florida Tech created some more cushion in the top of the sixth inning, beginning with two out against NSU reliever Alexander Llinas.
  • Anthony Fimiano reached on an infield single and then went to second on Gabe Garrett's opposite field single.
  • With Conner Wiggins at the dish, Garrett then swiped second.
  • Wiggins hit a ball to short that could've ended the inning but the throw to first was mishandled and with two out, both baserunners ran full speed to score and give Tech a 5-1 advantage.
  • The Panthers put the game in the following inning as with one out, Patrick and Noah Burke were each hit by a pitch from Sharks reliever Chase Campbell.
  • That set the stage for Marshall Burke, who came through with his biggest hit of the season to date, a three-run homer down the line to make it 8-1.
  • The Sharks were able to scratch across a run in the bottom of the eighth thanks to Roylan Quevedo's two-out RBI double off of Brayden DiCerb. However, DiCerb extinguished any potential rally by striking out pinch hitter Ty Torti to end the inning, stranding two runners in scoring position.
  • After allowing a leadoff double in the bottom of the ninth, DiCerb retired the next three batters to nail down the win.
Notable Panthers:
  • Aidan Lenzen produced his best start to date as a Panther, allowing just the one run on five hits over seven innings of work, striking out nine and walking none.
  • Gabe Garrett led the Panthers' 12-hit attack with three base hits of his own, while Marshall Burke and Jaden Hill each had two hits.
  • Garrett and Conner Wiggins each stole a base.
GAME TWO:
STATS OF THE GAME:
Final: Florida Tech 4, Nova Southeastern 6
Records: Florida Tech (9-10, 2-4 SSC) | Nova Southeastern (11-6, 5-1 SSC)
Location: Fort Lauderdale, Fla. | NSU Baseball Complex

STATS OF THE GAME:
  • The Panthers opened the scoring in the top of third once again with Garrett kickstarting the rally with a leadoff walk. A Wiggins single put runners at the corners.
  • Following a Hill strikeout, Adrian Dominguez's bunt went back to the mound and Garrett sprinted home. Sharks pitcher Edwin Alicea hurried his throw to the plate, going wide and allowing Garrett to score.
  • After Carlos Guzman struck out, Patrick's opposite field single plated Wiggins to double up the Crimson and Gray lead.
  • As they did in Game one, the Sharks response was immediate in the bottom half of the third, beginning with Torti's leadoff single against Tech starting pitcher Sean Means.
  • A wild pitch and Moronta single to left put NSU on the board. Another wild pitch and two walks then loaded the bases for Boris Pena.
  • Pena's sacrifice fly drove in Moronta to tie the game.
  • Anthony Stinson's double to left brought home Gabriel Esquivel to put the Sharks on top and chase Means from the game.
  • Rodriguez greeted Dylan Dieguez with an infield chopper that scored Quevedo.
  • Dieguez ended the Sharks' rally at that point by retiring the next two batters.
  • Marshall Burke led off the top of the fourth with a double to left and, following a walk to Roman Samson, came in to score on a Garrett RBI single. However, Garrett would be thrown out trying to stretch for a double.
  • Marshall Burke began another rally in the top of the sixth, this time with a line drive single to first that ate up Pena.
  • A pair of groundouts moved Burke to third, when Wiggins' two-out single left tied the game.
  • Once again, NSU fired right back with Torti igniting the rally with a leadoff walk from Panther reliever Tyler Dietz.
  • A passed ball and walk set the stage for Esquivel and his single down the right field line put the Sharks back on top.
  • A hit batter loaded the bases for Moronta, where heads-up defense from Guzman and Means prevented a run from scoring on a wild pitch.
  • Pena then lifted a sacrifice fly to right that brought in E squivel for an insurance run.
  • Florida Tech would have the tying run either on base or at the plate in each of the final three innings but were unable to plate a run on any of those occasions. The Panthers left nine runners on base for the game.
