Panthers Fall to No. 2 Tampa in Series Opener Despite Fast Start

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Panthers jumped out to an early lead against No. 2 Tampa on Friday night, but the Spartans rallied with consistent offense and timely execution to take the series opener, 8-4.

Records: Florida Tech (23-19, 13-12 SSC) | Tampa (33-6, 17-2 SSC)

STATS OF THE GAME:
  • Noah Burke put the Panthers up early in this one with a triple down the right field line, bringing home Jason Blackstone for the first score of the game, 1-0.

  • Jacob Guthrie finished the inning with a double down the right field line, bringing home Brett Kelly and Figueroa, 4-0, but in the process of sliding to third base, he was tagged out, ending the inning.
  • In response, the Spartans collected three runs in the top of the second inning behind an Edgardo Villegas double, a Kevin Karstette double, and a Maddox King double, each scoring one run and cutting into the Panther lead, 4-3.
  • Tampa added one run in the top of the third to tie the game via a ground out from Jhoander Irigoyen, allowing one run to score, 4-4.
  • After scoreless innings from both clubs, Tampa took their first lead in the game in the top of the fifth from a Villegas single, 5-4, and a Karstette ground out, which brought in a run, 6-4.
  • The Spartans increased their lead to a game-high three runs in the top of the sixth after some confusion in the infield allowed Nico Saladino to steal home, 7-4.
  • In the top of the ninth, the Spartans added on one final run from a Villegas single, which loomed too much for Tech, securing the win in game one for Tampa, 8-4.
  • Jacob Pino got the start for the Panthers and took the loss, lasting four and one-third innings, giving up 11 hits and six runs while walking one and striking out two.
