Panthers Bats Power Doubleheader Sweep and Series Win over Embry-Riddle

MELBOURNE, Fla – Panthers baseball came out swinging in Saturday's doubleheader, taking both games against Embry-Riddle in commanding fashion. Fueled by standout performances at the plate and strong outings on the mound, the Panthers rallied for an 8-3 win in game one before unleashing a 12-2 run-rule victory in game two to clinch the series sweep 2-1.

STATS OF THE GAME:
  • The Panthers got the scoring started in the bottom of the second inning after two runners, Carlos Guzman and Pedro Figueroa scored on back-to-back walks with the bases loaded giving Tech the lead 2-0.
  • Ahkil Nimmala and Conner Wiggins added to the Panther lead in the fourth inning with a collective of four runs.
  • Nimmala went full yard with runners Pedro Figueroa and Jacob Guthrie on the bases increasing the lead to 5-0, Gabe Garrett then doubled in the next bat and was brought home by a Wiggins single, 6-0.
  • The Eagles got on the board in the top of the sixth inning after a ground out at first base from Timo Aracena brought home one run in the process, 6-1.
  • One more run for the Eagles came in the sixth behind a walk with the bases loaded, 6-2.
  • In response, the Panthers added two runs, one in the seventh and one in the eighth both runs via an error by the Eagles allowing Jason Blackstone and Wiggins to score, 8-2.
  • The Eagles managed to collect a solo home run during their comeback attempt but that would be the only score given up by the Panthers as they cruised to victory 8-3 in game one of the day.
  • Aidan Lenzen got the start for the Panthers and received the win, lasting five and two-thirds innings, giving up three hits, and two runs, while walking four and striking out four.
  • Brayden DiCerb, Ryan Spitzer, and Payton McIntosh took the mound in relief for the Panthers. DiCerb lasted two and one-third innings, giving up three hits, and zero runs while walking one and striking out three. Spitzer made an appearance in an inning, giving up three hits, and one run while walking one and striking out none.
  • McIntosh finished the game's final inning giving up zero hits, and zero runs while walking none and striking out one.

STATS OF THE GAME:
  • The Panthers were all gas and no brakes to start this one rattling off three runs in the bottom of the first inning behind a Pedro Figueroa three-run homer bringing home Conner Wiggins, Noah Burke, and himself, 3-0.
  • In the bottom of the second, Tech added in one more behind a Gabe Garrett single down the left field line bringing home Jaden Hill, 4-0.
  • Akhil Nimmala, Hill, and Garrett added four more runs in the bottom of the third continuing to pour it on for the Panthers.
  • Nimmala singled up the middle bringing home Figueroa and later Hill singled through the middle bringing home Adrian Dominguez and Nimmala. Garrett capped the inning off singling inducing an error by the Eagles allowing Anthony Fimiano to reach home for the score, 8-0.
  • In the fourth inning, back-to-back wild pitches from Embry-Riddle brought in runs from Figueroa and Jacob Guthrie pushing the lead to double-digits, 10-0
  • After two scoreless innings, Austin Sewell crossed home plate on yet another wild pitch, 11-0.
  • The Eagles registered their first and only runs of the contest in the seventh inning from a Collin Mastromau triple that brought home two, 11-2.
  • The final run came from Guthrie as he singled up the middle, bringing home Joseph Phan, clinching the run-rule win for the Panthers 12-2.
  • Trenten Anderson got the start and the win for the Panthers, lasting six innings, giving up two hits, and zero runs while walking two and striking out five.
  • Tyler Dietz closed the game's final one inning giving up one hit, and two runs while walking one and striking out three.
 
NOTABLE PANTHERS  
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Akhil Nimmala set a career-high in RBIs with three in game one.
  • Trenten Anderson registered a season-high six innings pitched.
  • All-time vs. Embry-Riddle: 27-24
  • Tech is now 15-10 all-time at home vs. Embry-Riddle.
  • Gabe Garrett collected the 150th hit for his Florida Tech career and is now the Panther with the most hits in the 2020s.

UP NEXT: The Panthers will have the week off and hit the road to St. Petersburg, Florida to face off against Eckerd College starting on Friday, April 11 with the first pitch set for 6 pm.
