RV Panthers Come Up Short in SSC Battle Against RV Lynn

MELBOURNE, Fla. – Despite a career night from Thomas Strong and a milestone achievement from goalkeeper Jax Francisco, the RV Panthers dropped a tightly contested Sunshine State Conference matchup to RV Lynn, 9-7, Wednesday night at Rick Stottler Field.

FIRST QUARTER: 
  • The Fighting Knights took the early lead scoring the opening goal just one minute into the contest via a goal from Brian Hoskins putting Lynn up 1-0.
  • Lynn doubled up their lead just over one minute and a half later as Dom Veratti put one through the back of the net, 2-0.
  • The Panthers responded back cutting the lead to one after Thomas Strong registered a goal stemming from a penalty on Lynn.
  • Back-to-back goals for Lynn from Ethan McKinley and Connor Houston put the Panthers down three goals with just under four minutes remaining in the first quarter.
  • Keeping the score within striking distance, Gavin Stecher put in a much-needed goal with an assist by Andrew Walenty to cut the deficit to two goals, 4-2 heading into the second quarter.
 
SECOND QUARTER: 
  • A goal from Lynn's Jackson Cutter at the 12:30 mark pushed the lead back up to three goals, 5-2.
  • Answering back in a big way, Tech registered back-to-back goals behind Brett Nastos and Rob Gadomski assisted by Gary Lozito to cut the Fighting Knight lead to just one, 5-4.
  • The goals from Tech came just over two minutes apart at minutes 11:12 and 9:00.
  • From this point to halftime time both teams had just about felt each other out as no goals were scored in the final eight minutes of play.
  • Both teams had three shots on goal in the remaining time.
 
THIRD QUARTER:
  • The defense of both teams stayed in control for the first four minutes and 30 seconds into the second half until Lynn broke through putting the lead back up two as Houston registered his second goal of the night, 6-4.
  • Seven minutes later ending the goal drought for Tech came Strong dropping in his second goal of the night via an assist from Jakob Terpak, 6-5.
  • Just 19 seconds later Lynn answered back with a Nick Calleri goal to go back up two, 7-5
  • In the final three minutes of the quarter each team would get two shots off with but the defense would stand true and Lynn would take their two-goal lead heading into the final quarter.
 
FOURTH QUARTER: 
  • The Fighting Knights matched a game-high three-goal lead at the 8:13 mark behind a goal from Brian Hoskins, his second of the night, 8-5.
  • The Lynn lead grew to a game-high four goals behind Mitch Rini putting one through as they looked to run away with things, 9-5.
  • In a last attempt from the Panthers, Terpak put a shot in just 11 seconds after a faceoff violation committed by Lynn, cutting the lead to three, 9-6 at the 4:05 mark.
  • To follow at the 2:47 mark, Strong notched in his third of the night as he was assisted by Jack Cornwell, cutting the lead to two.
  • The Panthers managed to get one more shot on goal at the 39-second mark as Strong almost had his fourth, but the shot would be no good and Lynn would gain possession and run out the time as Tech would take the loss 9-7.
 
NOTABLE PANTHERS:   
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Lynn led Tech in shots with (36-24) and in groundballs (31-16).
  • Tech had the advantage in saves (11-9), but Lynn had more draw controls (15-19) compared to Techs (4-19).
  • Tech led in clears by five (22-27) to Lynn's (17-18),
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
 
  • All-time vs. Lynn: 8-5
  • Panthers have now won three of the five meetings against the Fighting Knights under Brad MacArthur.
  • Tech is 4-3 all-time at home against Lynn with each of the past two games in Melbourne being Panther wins in overtime.
  • Jax Francisco achieved 500 career saves with his 11-save performance tonight.
  • Jakob Terpak is currently fifth on the program's career assist list with 40 and is now the fifth player in program history with 40 or more career assists.
  • The three goals from Thomas Strong set a new career-high.
 
 
UP NEXT: The Panthers will stay home for their senior day as they face off against Rollins this coming Saturday at 1 PM.
