In this Scholar-Athlete Spotlight, we are featuring
Izzy Mohr of Florida Tech women's soccer. This summer, the Roswell, Georgia, native is gaining meaningful experience at an internship in his desired field. We caught up with Mohr to learn more about the incredible opportunity.
What company are you interning for this summer? What is your title and role with the company?
"I am interning for the company Accomplished this summer. They focus on in-home assistance and management. I am a part of the corporate finance team, and my responsibilities include payment processing, account reconciliation, auditing and collections. In addition, I am involved in setting up a new CRM system for our company."
What drew you to this internship? What steps did you have to take to earn your position within the company?
"This internship offered a unique opportunity working for a start-up organization. I was seeking an internship that would provide me with hands-on experience in areas closely related to my field of study. I was drawn to the opportunity to be involved in real-time decision-making and to witness firsthand what it takes to build and run a successful company from the ground up.
What stood out to me was the level of involvement. I'm not just observing; I actively contribute to important projects and strategic discussions. This level of exposure has been incredibly valuable in helping me apply what I've learned at Florida Tech so far.
To earn this position, I applied through LinkedIn and participated in a multi-step interview process, which included a hands-on project that tested my understanding of corporate finance."
What are some exciting tasks or projects that you have been able to be a part of?
"One of the most exciting projects I've participated in is implementing a new CRM system for our company. This has been a highly impactful and hands-on experience. I've played a key role in organizing and optimizing how we manage client data."
What is your major at Florida Tech? Why did you choose this direction for your education and is this something you always wanted to pursue?
"My undergraduate major at Florida Tech is Business Administration, and I'm currently fast-tracking into an MBA in Finance. I chose this path because I've always had a strong interest in personal finance, investing, and understanding how money moves within both individual and business environments.
What drew me to finance specifically is its universal importance. Regardless of the industry, every successful organization relies on a sound financial strategy and informed decision-making. I enjoy analyzing financial data, identifying opportunities for growth, and thinking strategically about long-term planning."
How has being a scholar-athlete prepared you for the work you are currently doing in your internship? What skills have you taken from your time as a scholar-athlete that help you in your internship?
"Being a student athlete has greatly prepared me for the responsibilities and challenges of this internship. Balancing academics with the demands of collegiate athletics has taught me how to manage my time efficiently, stay organized, and remain focused under pressure. These are all essential skills in any professional setting.
This summer, I've had to balance my training and soccer schedule alongside this internship, reinforcing my ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and stay accountable. Being part of the women's soccer team has also helped me develop strong communication and collaboration skills, which I now use daily when working with the leadership team at Accomplished."
How is your internship preparing you for a career you would like to do after graduation?
"My internship has been very valuable in helping me clarify the direction I want to take in my career after graduation. It's given me a much deeper understanding of the different areas within finance. Working in a startup environment has also exposed me to the realities of entrepreneurship and what it takes to launch and run a business daily. This summer I've gained hands-on experience that goes far beyond classroom learning. This internship has not only strengthened my technical skills but also helped me build confidence in navigating real-world business challenges. It's confirmed my interest in pursuing a finance-driven career, whether within corporate finance, financial planning, or eventually starting something of my own."
What advice would you give another scholar-athlete/prospective scholar-athlete who is looking to pursue a similar path?
"My biggest piece of advice for another scholar-athlete is to start seeking out internship opportunities early. Internships are incredibly valuable because they give real-world experience that complements your academic and athletic commitments. They help you better understand what a day-to-day career in your field might look like and can clarify what direction you want to take after graduation. It's also important to build a strong resume that highlights not just your academic achievements, but also the skills you've developed as a student athlete.
Most importantly, stay proactive. Balancing athletics and academics is already a challenge, but planning ahead and being intentional about gaining experience outside the classroom will put you in a strong position for life after college."
