MELBOURNE, FLA. – In this edition of Beyond The Game, we are highlighting Malaya Nelson from Florida Tech Softball. Malaya is a Sophomore outfielder from Snohomish, Washington.
 
What is your major at Florida Tech, and why did you choose it?
I'm studying Marine Biology and I chose it because I've always loved the ocean. I've always wanted to do something that has to do with the ocean and the animals.

What is one skill that you've learned playing softball that translates to the classroom?
I would definitely say hard work. Not every day in softball is easy, so learning how to time manage and focus on what you're struggling with can easily be applied to the classroom.

What is your favorite class you have taken at Florida Tech?
My ecology class I took last semester with Dr. Bush. For one of our classes, we got to go snorkeling and saw dolphins.

Transitioned from High School to Florida Tech, what would you say has been the biggest challenge you've faced?
I would definitely say time management. It is something all athletes coming into college have to learn because the balance between being a student and an athlete is the toughest challenge to face.

With your sister playing and graduating from Tech, was it always a dream to follow her and be a Panther as well?
The goal was always to play softball in college after watching her play and becoming a Panther like her was just a plus.

What is one thing you're looking forward to as you progress throughout your major and your time a Florida Tech?
I'm looking forward to figuring out what I'm going to do with my major. With Marine Biology, there are so many different paths I can take, so I am super excited to see what I'll end up doing.
