Tech Earns Highest Ranked Win in Program History with Ryan Chancer's Overtime Game-Winner Over No. 4 Wingate

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Florida Tech men's lacrosse team knocks off No. 4 Wingate with an overtime game-winner from Ryan Chancer on Saturday, Feb. 14. With the win, Tech picks up their second ranked win of the season and moves to 2-1 on the season while Wingate falls to 1-1.

GAME NOTES
FIRST QUARTER
  •  After the Bulldogs won the opening faceoff, the Panther defense was tested early. Wingate's first shot was wide but the second was saved by Jax Francisco.
  • Francisco made another save at the 11:25 mark to hold Wingate off the board.
  • Ryan Chancer put Tech on the board at the 8:44.
  • Both teams combined for six turnovers after Francisco's third save of the quarter.
  • Garrett Gmeiner caused a Wingate turnover at 2:29 to get Tech on the offensive. After shots by Chancer and Max Henry were wide, JD Ross converted off an assist by Brooks van Esselstyn before the end of the period.
 
SECOND QUARTER
  • Tech continued their momentum after Steve Ulrichs came all the way across the field for the defender's first goal of the season.
  • Ulrichs lead the offensive charge again at the 11:20 mark as he assisted on Carson Mann's goal.
  • The Panthers pushed the lead to five as Robert McNamara scored an unassisted goal with nine minutes remaining in the half.
  • Wingate snapped the Panthers 5-0 with a goal at 7:16.
  • Aidan Addison immediately got the point back with an unassisted goal with 6:29 left in the second period.
  • The Bulldogs fought back as they scored with 4:14 and 2:01 remaining in the half.
  • Tech went into halftime with a 7-3 lead while out-shooting the Bulldogs 19-17.
     
THIRD QUARTER
  • Wingate came out of the half aggressive as they found the back of the net within the first two minutes of the new quarter.
  • Thomas Strong stretched the Tech lead back to four with his first goal of the game.
  • The Bulldogs notched back-to-back goals at the 9:55 and 9:02 marks.
  • After two saves by Jax Francisco, Joe Coveleski put Tech back on the board with six minutes left in the quarter.
 
FOURTH QUARTER
  • As all good teams do, Wingate scored with 11:19 and 7:22 to shrink the Tech lead to one.
  • After winning the faceoff, Wingate fired three consecutive shots to no avail as Florida Tech did an excellent job defending.
  • The Bulldogs again gained possession with five minutes remaining as they missed two shots wide.
  • Jax Francisco preserved the Tech lead with a huge save with 3:26 remaining/.
  • Wingate held firm on defense as Ryan Chancer's shot with 42 seconds left hit the post to keep the Panthers lead at one.
  • The Bulldogs called timeout with 30 seconds left as they draw up an offensive play that would tie the game with 12 seconds left in the game.
  • One last crucial save by Francisco as time expired pushed the game to overtime.
 
OT
  • Wingate won the faceoff to open overtime. A shot by the Bulldogs hit off the post as Steve Ulrichs gained possession.
  • Behind the goal, Ryan Chancer was able to beat his defender to the spot as he turned around and fired a shot passed the Wingate goaltender to give Tech their second consecutive ranked win of 2026.
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
  • With the win over No. 4 Wingate, this is now Tech's highest ranked win in program history.
  • Jax Francisco was a wall in net today for the Panthers with 10 saves on 38 shots with only nine goals allowed.
  • This is the Panthers first overtime game-winner since 2024 in the quarterfinal of the SSC Tournament.
  • Ryan Chancer and Thomas Strong had two goals each.
  • Garrett Gmeiner collected five ground balls today.
 
UP NEXT
The Panthers will next travel to Tigerville, South Carolina as they take on No. 20 North Greenville on Saturday, Feb. 21. Game slate for 12:00 p.m. EST.
