Box Score BOCA RATON, Fla. - After leading for nearly four quarters, Florida Tech (9-10, SSC 6-7) headed into overtime against Lynn (10-11, SSC 6-8), where the Panthers were downed by a charity bucket at the final second of play.
Leading the way for the Crimson and Gray, senior guard
DeLise Williams tied for a game-high 18 points (5-fo-16), and tabbed six rebounds to mark her
13th game this season where she scored in double-digits. The Panther currently ranks
12th inside the SSC
leaderboard, averaging 12.5 points per game.
Behind her, teammates
Tanease Richardson and
Markeema Crawford chipped in with 10 and nine points respectively, while Michaela
Gelbaugh went 3-for-6 from the field to total eight points and a rebound.
As a team, Florida Tech shot 70.8 percent from the free throw line and outscored Lynn 27-9 in bench points.
After a slow 7-4 first quarter start, both teams upend the tempo during the second period, as
Delise Williams got things going for FIT after a made free throw. From there, the Panthers went on a short five-point unanswered run to go up, 12-4. However, Lynn answered with a quick bucket by
Janay Williams to slow the Panthers tempo around the seven-minute mark. With the clock to counting down, FIT managed to hold a narrow three-score lead as the teams traded baskets for the remainder of the stanza. At the half, the Melbourne lineup headed into the locker room ahead, 24-19.
Returning from the intermission, FIT and Lynn hit the hardwood but remained evenly matched, as the Panthers only held an eight-point scoring advanced over the Knights, 42-34 to end the third. Heading into the fourth however, Lynn scored five consecutively unanswered points to shorten the deficit by one, 50-49 with 3:34 remaining. Immediately following up with a score,
Aniquah Swan tossed up a good layup inside the paint to pull FIT ahead by three. Unfortunately, Lynn went on to score three more times, and held Florida Tech to just one layup to send the game into overtime tied at 54.
In extra minutes, the Fighting Knights were sent to the free throw line just 12 seconds into the play, where they managed to sink both baskets and take the lead, 56-54. Although,
Gelbaugh tied the game at 56-56, LU drained back-to-back baskets to jump ahead by four. However, in the closing minute, a big three and two free throws by Williams allowed FIT to tie the game at 63. Unfortunately, with four ticks to spare and Lynn with the ball, a last second foul by the Panthers sealed all hope of winning, as
Lynn's Paola Vazquez was sent to the line to sink her free throw with one second remaining.
Florida Tech returns to the court this Saturday for its annual Play for Kay game, where they take on Saint Leo at the Charles and Ruth Clemente Center. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. ET.
