Panthers Beaten Twice by the Sharks

Florida Tech drops both games of the doubleheader to Nova Southeastern

MELBOURNE, Fla. - Despite their best efforts Florida Tech could not slow down the Nova Southeastern Sharks offense as they conceded double-digit runs in both outings.

James Gronberg led the offense with five hits in 10 at-bats and scored twice and batted in one run. Jakob Newton, Rodnie Bernard and Daniel Szpik also made solid contact with the ball throughout the day.

Sam Crocker was the first pitcher to hit the rubber in game one for the Panthers. During his outing, he allowed six runs, five hits and tossed out three. Colin Cristello came in to relieve Crocker in the fifth and saw one full inning of work during which he gave up five runs, three hits.

Out the bullpen next was junior, Ryan Allain, who finished out the game for the Crimson and Gray as he tallied five Ks but gave up three runs and five hits.

NSU struck early as the Sharks put up two runs in the opening frame. They extended their lead out to five when Andrew Liberty blasted a three-run shot over the left field wall in the top half of the third.

Szpik and Jacob Buser returned the favor in the bottom half of the third as they sent shots of their own careening over the left and right-center walls, bringing the score to 5-3. Jakob Newton joined the fray as he blasted a three-run shot over the right-field fence to earn the first lead of the game for FIT at 6-5.

A wild pitch by Cristello scored the tying run for NSU in the top of the fifth.

The Shark's Jake Anchia grabbed the lead in the sixth when he singled through the right side. They added to their lead later in the inning off another single that brought home two. Another two runs crossed the plate to bring the score to 11-6 heading into the bottom of the sixth.

Liberty cracked another dinger over the left field wall in the seventh to extend the Sharks lead to six. NSU belted out their third homer in the top of the ninth and then scored once more due to a wild pitch by Allain. This ended the scoring at 14-6 for game one.

Game two saw Jake Lane open the contest. Lane threw one and two-thirds innings during which he allowed six runs and eight hits. Rhett Willis replaced Lane on the mound. During his five and a third innings, Willis gave up five runs on nine hits and struck out two.

Jordan Murray got some action in the rotation as he held the Sharks scoreless in the final two frames of the series.

The second game kicked off with a familiar sighting as another ball left Andy Seminick - Les Hall Field for NSU this time off the bat of Anchia.

FIT knotted the game at two-all in the bottom half of the first. The first of the two came off a throwing error by the Shark's catcher that allowed James Gronberg to cross home plate. Buser later on slowly ground out to first unassisted but it gave Szpik enough time to cross the bag.

The momentum swung back in NSU's favor in the second as they tallied four runs to bring the game to 6-2. A sac fly by Jakob Newton narrowed the gap to three as the Panthers looked to answer Nova in the bottom of the inning.

James Gronberg added his name to the long list of this afternoon's power hitters as he smacked it over the right-field wall that brought them within two. The Florida Tech rally ended abruptly though as NSU managed a big four-run fourth inning that extended their lead to 10-4.

Nova then tacked on the final run of the night during the sixth inning off of an Anchia single. This cemented the final at 11-4.

FIT will take the next five days to get ready for another conference series as they welcome Embry-Riddle to Melbourne. First pitch is scheduled for Friday, March 23 at 6 p.m. and will be streamed live at FloridaTechSports.com
