MELBOURNE, Fla. – On a cold and windy afternoon on the Florida Tech campus saw the Panthers start off the day slow. The team would look to rally late in both games but would not find enough momentum to comeback in either dropping the first, 16-2, and the second, 9-8.
Game one saw an offensive explosion by Eckerd who would score 13 unanswered run from the top half of the first to the sixth inning. The Crimson and Gray would get on the board for the first time in the bottom of the seventh when junior
James Gronberg sent a shot up the middle allowing
Kevin Capella to cross home plate. The action would pick back up in the ninth as a Tritons homer would bring across their final three runs of the game but
Pierson Reynolds would earn the last run of contest scoring
Michael Van Degna when he grounded into a fielder's choice.
Game two would start with back-to-back lead off dingers as Eckerd's Sam Cochrane would send one over the right field wall to open the scoring. But, not to be outdone Gronberg would power a shot over the exact same part of the wall tying the score at 1-1 before
Ryan Sinzenich drove home
Raul Quintero to give the team a brief 2-1 lead. The Tritons would find their stride in the top of the second as they would drive in five runs.
FIT would bring the game back within two runs when the Cambridge, Canada native
Zac Orchard found a gap in left field that allowed both Daniel Spzik and Quintero to trot across the bag. Eckerd would manage to snag another run in the top of the fourth that brought their lead to 7-4.
Jacob Buser would however respond in the bottom of the fifth when he sent a shot over the right field wall earning him his fourth homerun of the season. Later in the same inning, Capella would send a beautiful shot down the left field line that would score Orchard and Sinzenich that tied the teams at seven apiece.
A pair of Tritons runs in the seventh would put Florida Tech behind 7-9 coming down the stretch. Things looked promising for the team in the bottom half of the final inning of the night especially after a Capella walk would score Buser. However, Eckerd's bullpen would get them out of a jam and close the night out with a one-run advantage.
The team will look to put these games behind them as they shift their focus to their upcoming opponent in the Cavaliers of Walsh University. The schedule start time for this matchup is 2 p.m. and will be held at Andy Seminick - Les Hall Field located on the Florida Tech campus.
