MELBOURNE, Fla. – Florida Tech head coach
Billy Mims added more talent to the Panther men's basketball team with the singing of
Timi Toluogunkoya to the 2022-23 roster.
Toluogunkoya, a 6-8, 200-pound forward who hails from Houston, Texas, comes to Florida Tech after spending one year at NJCAA DI Coffeyville Community College.
During the 2021-22 season, he appeared in 23 games with five starts averaging 3.3 points and 2.7 rebounds per game while shooting 53.7% from the field and 53.1% from the free throw line. He recorded 19 blocks and seven steals during his freshman campaign.
"I'm excited to be joining a talented group of players who are very competitive within the conference," said Tolugunkoya. "My mom was also a big influence in my choice to attend Florida Tech. She was excited for me to have the opportunity to attend a world-renowned university and pursue a degree that will be globally respected."
Additionally, Toluogunkoya brings international experience to the Panther roster, having played one season for the Thames Valley Cavaliers of the English NBL 1 Men's National League in Uxbridge, England. He averaged 4.1 points, four rebounds, and one block per game while shooting 68% from the floor.
"I'm excited to come to Florida Tech and play for Coach
Billy Mims. Coach Mims coached one of my former coaches with the Thames Valley Cavaliers, Pete Deppisch. Pete played for Coach Mims in the top pro league in the UK, the BBL, and had a great playing experience with him.
Toluogunkoya graduated from Cheshire Academy in Cheshire, Conn. where he shot 65% from the field and 50% from beyond the arc during his senior season. Prior to Cheshire Academy, he attended Village High School in Katy, Texas earning second-team All-District his junior year.
"We are very excited to have
Timi Toluogunkoya join our Panther family," said Coach Mims. "Timi checks off a lot of the boxes we look for when recruiting scholar athletes to our program.
"He's an outstanding young man with a positive personality and a big smile! He's extremely intelligent, a very good student, and a perfect fit in the classroom at our high academic university.
"On the basketball court, Timi is tall, long, and athletic. He runs the floor well, jumps well, and has a very nice skill set. Timi will bring a shot blocking presence to our defense and will help us rebounding as well."
